At the HACKMANS – held at the Civic's Wintergarden, Auckland, Monday 10 December - my abortive attempt to meet the producers' brief by delivering an instant review of the night's proceedings (before the end, as it turned out) was cut short. Fair enough. But having agreed to be acerbic and taken the ‘no turn unstoned' approach, I intended to end as follows: “Let me close by quoting Dame Diana Rigg, who compiled the book No Turn Unstoned: ‘There are so many wonderful qualities to be found in the theatre, and courage predominates every time an entrance is made, every time an actor or actress undertakes the daring and delicate task of making an audience believe. Another great quality is generosity of spirit.' “I agree (and the same goes for theatre critics, by the way). “I thank you all for your courage, generosity and spirit.” Call me old fashioned but I did want to finish on that upbeat. |
