Another fantastic year of the Cultural Capital’s theatrical excellence was celebrated last night, (Sunday 14 December), at the Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards in Paramount Theatre. After a tumultuous year full of heavy loss for the community, these Awards were a reflection of the importance to support each other through the good and bad times. “We are a community and this is not a competition. Auckland Theatre Awards winners 2014 TOP ACCOLADES HANDED OUT TO AUCKLAND’S THEATRE COMMUNITY The Auckland Theatre Awards celebrated their 6th anniversary last night with the introduction of formally judged Excellence Awards. The first time such awards have been given out in Auckland. The awards were decided on by a panel of 6 judges who were kept secret until the event last night. The judging panel for 2014 were; theatre maker Marie Adams, actor and director Rachel House, playwright Sam Brooks, actor and theatre manager Sam Snedden, festival director Carla von Zon and theatre administrator/lover Gilli Sutton. CAPITAL E ANNOUNCES RESIGNATION OF STEPHEN BLACKBURN Capital E announced today that Stephen Blackburn has resigned after more than ten years with the organisation, most recently as their National Theatre for Children’s Creative Producer. Speaking today of Mr Blackburn’s decision, Capital E Director, Stuart Grant said “we are very sad to be saying goodbye to our friend and colleague as he embarks on this new chapter. POLITICAL SHENNANIGANS, ECOLOGICAL TERRORISM AND TWITCHY FAIRYTALES LEAD TO AWARD FOR WELLINGTON PLAYWRIGHT The Bruce Mason Playwriting Award was presented to Ralph McCubbin Howell at the Playmarket Accolades in Wellington on 23 November 2014. The $10,000 cash prize recognises early success in the career of the winning playwright and is designed to encourage their continued exploration of the theatre medium. Ralph graduated from Victoria University with a BA (Honours) First Class in Theatre and English Literature before going on to train at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in the UK. [more]

MILESTONES TO BE HONOURED AT THEATRE AWARDS NATIONWIDE At this year’s theatre awards ceremonies and end-of-year celebrations a new nationwide initiative – The New Zealand Theatre Service Honours – will be launched. Practitioners who have reached milestone achievements by participating in 25, 50 or 100 professional shows are eligible to receive the honours. These honours will be presented annually at the regional theatre awards and end of year celebrations. Much like a rugby capping ceremony the purpose of the awards is to celebrate commitment and longevity. [more]

2014 WESTPAC NEW ZEALAND ARTS AWARDS RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED Following a ceremony at SkyCity Theatre this evening, the Arts Foundation of New Zealand has announced the 2014 recipients of their Laureate and New Generation Awards, the Harriet Friedlander New York Residency and Award for Patronage donations, including over half a million dollars in cash donations. Tonight’s Westpac New Zealand Arts Awards ceremony marks over $4.8million in philanthropic donations made to 167 New Zealand artists since the Foundation’s inception. [more]

The Court Theatre is an established theatre company creating at least 15 productions each year. CENTREPOINT: FORTY YEARS OF PROFESSIONAL THEATRE IN THE MANAWATU Centrepoint Theatre in Palmerston North is celebrating its 40th anniversary, as New Zealand’s only professional theatre outside the main centres. To celebrate the anniversary, novelist, playwright and actor Peter Hawes has written a history of Centrepoint, which will be published online, and in a limited, hard copy version. An illustrated calendar, based on the history, will also be sold to help raise funds for the theatre. [more]
