Biography

Dan Bain is a professional comedian, actor, improviser, writer and circus artist. He has been a full time entertainer since 2002 when he graduated after two years at the New Zealand circus training school CircoArts.

Since then he has been employed by the Court Jesters, the most successful professional improvisational theatre troupe in New Zealand. Here he has regularly performed in or MC-ed SCARED SCRIPTLESS, the country's longest running comedy show. Also he has been heavily involved in improvisational comedy shows and events for a wide number of corporate clients, regularly devising themes, characters and acts specific to their events and needs. His work here has exposed him to a wide range of audiences, from High School students to the Prime Minister of New Zealand. He has also worked as an improvisor for ConArtists (Auckland) and The Improvisors (Wellington).

He is also the Creative Dictator of his own theatrical and multimedia production company NOOSED OCTOPUS. Under this umbrella he has toured the world as a professional street entertainer performing in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, America and three separate tours of Canada. He has performed at such prestigious events as the HALIFAX BUSKERS FESTIVAL, THE SINGAPORE RIVER BUSKERS FESTIVAL and the EDMONTON FRINGE FESTIVAL to name but a few.

He speaks to over 10 000 first year university students per year through New Zealand and the UK as a motivational speaker with THE IDEAS AGENCY and their UNISMART programme.

His writing credits include STAG WEEKEND (with Brendon Bennetts), THE CHRISTCHURCH GHOST WALK (with Javier Jarquin) and KIWIANA for Chante danse. Also the silent kids shows A PAINTBOX OF CLOWNS, WHY ARE MY PARENTS SO BORING? and an adaptation of HANSEL AND GRETEL as well as GAMEPLAN for Young and Hungry Wellington (nominated best play for young people 2012) and DRONES and FORBIDDEN BIRDS EMBARRASSED BEES for Radio NZ.

His professional directing credits include A PAINTBOX OF CLOWNS (at Court and Fortune Theatres), HANSEL AND GRETEL, THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN COOK,
RAPUNZEL and WHY ARE MY PARENTS SO BORING? for The Christchurch Court Theatre.

Finally since 2002 he has been performing as a standup comedian and MC in universities, festivals, burlesque shows, casinos, and comedy clubs through New Zealand with his unique blend of circus skills, flights of bizarre imagination, cheerful nihilism and quick wit including SHARP and ORPHANS OF COMEDY for the NZ Comedy Festival.

Fresh and charming 14 Jul 2012
Fleur is three-and-a-half and wears pink boots. She sits behind me on her mother’s lap. Around us is the happy hum of children winding up and adults winding down. The intimacy of the Hutchinson Studio is perfect for children’s shows, and a white box, with spotlight circles of red, blue and green, is all that is needed when the lycra and fun-fur costumes are so colourful and cute. In current language 12 Jul 2012
The Young and Hungry season always offers some insights into the pre-occupations of teenagers. From the current language – tots – to issues like cyber bullying, body image, social networking, and the gulf between the cool kids and the outsiders. This year’s crop of three plays written for young actors and back of house practitioners is up there with the best years of this now long running season. [more]
Social media in lead role on youth drama 9 Jul 2012
Social media, in particular Facebook, is becoming a dominate feature of plays and this year the Young and Hungry season at BATS is no exception. And this year the three plays that make up the programme achieve, without exception, all the ideals of the Young and Hungry concept and are probably some of the best productions seen in the 18 years the programme has been going.
