THE INTRICATE ART OF ACTUALLY CARING at Telecom Playhouse Theatre, WEL Energy Trust Academy of Performing Arts
reviewed by Mark Houlahan 8 Jul 2010
The search for secular sainthood?
FUEL FESTIVAL 2010 It was a cold and rainy week. Two boys from Wellington bought their stylish road play to Hamilton. Meanwhile, back in Wellington, Ian McKellen bought his own fame back to Wellywood to stage Waiting for Godot, the biggest road play of them all. [more]

SALON at Patrick’s Hairdressing, Ward St
reviewed by Mark Houlahan 8 Jul 2010
Salon soap
FUEL FESTIVAL 2010 Salon was a welcome local attempt at exploiting the theatre potential of non-traditional theatre spaces. A salon is a great choice: so much potential for narcissism and display. The hot lights, the big mirrors. Everything is on display. [more]

MAURITIUS at Circa One

Gripping and unsettling
A death in the family brings out the best or worst in people, and Theresa Rebeck takes the latter tack in her comedy/suspense. [more]

AUNTY MCDUFF’S MAGICAL TRUNK at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Nik Smythe 7 Jul 2010
Much mirth in versatile diversion
It couldn’t be more appropriate for a midwinter school holiday family production to be on the topic of making your own fun on a wet, rainy day. Three big kids, at least old enough to play without adult supervision, are kicking around their Aunty’s attic when her giant trunk spits out a quest written on a piece of paper, to find Aunty McDuff’s pet dog Dougal. SNAKE AND LIZARD at Selwyn Theatre, Kohimarama
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 7 Jul 2010
Mostly entertaining and thought-provoking
On an expansive set with warm colours and tones, set and lighting designer Michael Knapp uses a large cyc-screen to maximum effect, to create a clear yet cosy desert land, where we meet the many wonderful creatures and characters from the book by Joy Cowley, Snake And Lizard. [more]

TREASURE ISLAND at TAPAC Theatre, Western Springs - return season

Leeringly funny
The Outfit Theatre Company never fails to impress. Their encore season of Treasure Island is a fanciful and polished adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel. [more]

THE ADVENTURES OF ALADDIN at Gryphon
reviewed by John Smythe 6 Jul 2010
Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves
Despite a lack of flair in the stage design (the image above is not from the set) this version of Aladdin turns out to work quite well. Initially quite wordy, static and evenly paced – after Aladdin has demonstrated his (purposely) clumsy attempts at hip hop – it warms up, especially when Jason Chasland’s Genii appears, but that takes a while. BOXES at Capital E

Totally absorbing
With no dialogue to speak of, well-known puppeteers Annie Forbes and Tim Denton, under the direction of Peter Wilson, bring the characters of Bernie and Elton to the stage in a highly original and creative show that had the young members of the audience – as well as many of the parents – fascinated from start to finish. Children caught up in magical hi-jinks
A monster who needed lessons on how to scare was the favourite for some, while others were excited about helping a girl speak to a prince. [more]

THE UGLY DUCKLING at 4 Moncrieff St., Mt. Victoria

Action, humour and interaction
An idyllic wetland somewhere near Wellington is the creative and imaginative setting for KidzStuff Theatre for Children's re-telling of The Ugly Duckling story. [more]
