MUSICALITY at Greenlane Christian Centre, 17 Marewa Rd
reviewed by Jacqui Cesan 2 Jun 2010
Confident crew ready to move beyond a variety concert
Musicality is the debut show from Hopscotch and as I knew that many of them were relatively inexperienced my expectation was not high. I was preparing myself for another Hip Hop show (which seem to happen weekly at the moment) and was pleasantly surprised to see that there was a variety of dance in the programme. [more]

THE POOR DEARS/ THE WIZARD OF OZ at Southern Ballet Theatre
reviewed by Elizabeth O’Connor 1 Jun 2010
Oppression, hilarity, poignancy
The University of Canterbury’s Platform Festival has programmed bravely. Marlow’s Doctor Faustus (directed for the Free Theatre by Peter Falkenberg) sits next to Different Light theatre company’s The Poor Dears and the company’s work in progress, The Wizard of Oz. [more]

JANE KELLER: BOOMERS BEHAVING BADLY at St James Theatre 1st Floor Gallery

Forget cougars – this snow leopard is queen of the jungle
Having become somewhat of a musical icon around Wellington, Jane Keller can now draw an audience that would be the envy of many performers. [more]

MACBETH at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 30 May 2010
Ultimately superficial interpretation
The Bard of Avon’s shortest tragedy, well known to anyone in my generation who did sixth form, is given a right going over by director/adaptor James Wenley and company. In modernising the classic parable of murderous ambition as a self-fulfilling prophecy, Wenley has also transformed the gritty supernatural thriller into an absurdist black comedy. [more]

JANE KELLER: BOOMERS BEHAVING BADLY at St James Theatre 1st Floor Gallery

Dramatic flair and intensity
Baby boomers – that is, those born between 1945 and 1960 – gathered last night to hear Jane Keller lampoon their generation in song and have a great time. They weren't disappointed. Keller's one-woman, cabaret-style show Boomers Behaving Badly presented songs of botox, grand children, well-endowed dentists, revenge porn, romantic weekends in Paris and high school reunions. 2010 MADE IN NEW ZEALAND at Opera House
reviewed by Jennifer Shennan 28 May 2010
Footnote’s triumph lies with Purlieu
The stunning design of costume and lighting, and wonderfully driving music, gave real coherence to the theme, and the company transformed itself. This is Footnote’s most mature and striking work to date, with new recruits merging into a strong team. Purlieu will do them and the country proud in Shanghai in July. [more]

2010 MADE IN NEW ZEALAND at Opera House

Physically robust ensemble in tight performance mode
In these times of increasing global conformity, when they are even threatening to take the “Kiwi” out of KiwiBank who can you count on to wave the flag for Godzone? Footnote Dance would have to be one of the front-runners, with their proud proclamation of Made in New Zealand works and a superb poster featuring the North and South Islands composed entirely of bodies in motion [more]

COFFEE CUPS AND A PORRIDGE POT AT FRYING PAN LAKE at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 26 May 2010
Charming
Musicians are by nature performers, and great concerts are inherently theatrical. But few have the confidence to fashion a theatre show and blend it with music to create something, well, different – not musical theatre, not theatre with songs, but something much more homogenised. [more]

TEA FOR TOOT at BATS
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 26 May 2010
Whimsy and menace
This is like a modern riff on Arsenic and Old Lace, though not in any way derivative. Actors Alex Lodge and Cherie Jacobson and director Edward Watson have devised something altogether more whimsical even than those two old dears who poisoned the elderly and infirm. [more]

LULLABY JOCK at Downstage Theatre

A brave piece
One of the great sadnesses in families is when children don’t get to know about their parents when they were young and full of ideals and promise. As kids we can be so judgemental, not understanding what events have shaped our parents. At the same time it’s a brave thing to do, to literally put yourself in your father’s shoes. [more]
