SAMMY J & RANDY IN RICKETTS LANE (AUS) at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by John Smythe 5 May 2010
Dynamic whimsy and wit
After last year’s phantasmagorical Sammy J in the Forest of Dreams, this year’s Sammy J & Randy in Ricketts Lane is altogether simpler and more domestic, yet no less entertaining. A wonderfully wrought tale of suburban and urban life, it is played out through impeccable performance, puppetry, song, light and sound. [more]

MEDLOCK & MUSGROVE: THE GIANT FACE (NZ) at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Karyn Cushen 5 May 2010
Their most impressive work to date
The Giant Face is a hypothetical ultra-big-budget-watch-out-Hollywood film written and directed collaboratively by Peter Jackson and James Cameron. Massive. However, due to a few indiscretions in the eighties Jackson is forced to cast the most desperate actor in the world as its lead. Cue Harry McNaughton. [more]

JIMEOIN: SOMETHING... SMELLS FUNNY (IRE / AUST) at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Joanna Davies 5 May 2010
The audience loved every minute
When you see his show, you get a laid-back man on a stage making pithy observations about everyday things. It’s comedy to make you clutch your sides and want to shout “Yes!” at the same time. And it’s magic. [more]

CAREY MARX: DOOM GLOOM BOOM (UK) at The Classic Studio
reviewed by Rachael McKinnon 5 May 2010
A perfect late-night show
As Carey says, there has been a boom in doom and gloom - and why shouldn't the comedy industry get on board? He promises us his most depressing hour of comedy, yet. I have never been happier during an hour of social anxiety in my life. [more]

CORI GONZALZ-MACUER IS IN2 MUZIK (NZ) at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 5 May 2010
Self-deprecation and social commentary
Cori Gonzalez-Macuer’s poker face mixed with deadpan humour and his honest (at times almost too honest) casual, ‘in the moment’ style, is first-rate and strikes an audible chord with the hip young opening night audience ... [more]

WILSON DIXON’S AMERICAN DREAM at Crunchie Comedy Chamber, Town Hall
reviewed by Nik Smythe 5 May 2010
Popular festival favourite and rightly so
You’d have a tough job making a capacity concert-chamber roar with virtually continuous laughter look as effortless as Wilson Dixon does. With his Stetson and amber shades, his redneck drawl is so authentic it almost sounds fake, like his ponytail, and if he was any more relaxed he probably wouldn’t have got out of bed. [more]

TIC TIC (NZ) at Limelight Lounge, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Adey Ramsel 5 May 2010
Deserves a longer life
Actor, musician and composer Paul Barrett squashes the myth straight away that all sufferers of Tourette’s twist and squirm their way through life yelling obscenities. Disappointment set aside, Paul gallops through his one hour show illustrating why he has been theatrically successful, jumping from one brilliantly drawn characterisation to another, from the piano, through classical pastiches and parodies, back to finely-tuned impersonations. COMEDY APOCALYPSE (NZ) at Basement Theatre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 5 May 2010
Mixed bag, snack-sized
A total of ten cheeky young jokester-lings show off five odd minutes apiece of their comedy chops … The considerable effort it takes just to step up to the mic notwithstanding, the production falls somewhat short of the advertised “like a meteor hitting the earth … spectacular!” [more]

STEVE WRIGLEY @WRIGGLEMANIA at Basement Theatre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 5 May 2010
Unashamed
He’s one of those endearingly eccentric yet plainly human comedians, brimming with playful energy and continuously sporting a wide grin that echoes Terry Jones ... Wrigley’s infectious charm is derived partly from the vivid descriptions of the people he meets and stuff he encounters, all regaled with a self-effacing twinkle in his eye. [more]

JUSTINE SMITH IN JUSSI TOWN (NZ) at Basement Theatre
reviewed by Rachael McKinnon 5 May 2010
Candid, lewd and spunky
Welcome to Jussi Town, population: 1... Well on Tuesday night, population: 100-ish. For a short stay of an hour we have been welcomed into Jussi Town where she proudly announces she is Sheriff. But, it seems that almost anything goes. [more]
