JOSIE LONG: BE HONOURABLE! (UK) at Club Ivy, The Garden Club, 13B Dixon St
reviewed by Phoebe Smith 5 May 2010
PowerPointed passion, idealism and genuine excitement
Josie Long’s stand up show Be Honourable popped the top off my comed-o-meter, affixing me in a perma-state of giant grin, broken only by primitive howls of hilarity. [more]

JEFF GREEN: CRAZY FROM THE HEAT (UK/AUS) at The Powerstation, 33 – 35 Mt Eden Rd
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 5 May 2010
British charm and constant merriment
Jeff Green’s opening night is best summed up by one of the few heckles in the night: at the end of it a woman wails, “No, I don’t want you to finish!” With infectious effervescence and smiling sarcasm from start to finish, Jeff is an energetic ball of British mischief. Softly spoken now and then, but hugely entertaining throughout, he has mastered the art of comic story telling to perfection. [more]

CAREY MARX: CARYNESS (UK) at The Classic
reviewed by Rachael McKinnon 4 May 2010
Takes you to the brink
He is our guide as he shares with us the subjects that if talked about in a comedy set will get complaints and ultimately make an entire room go silent. This happens at least twice. [more]

JARLATH REGAN (IRELAND) at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Jackson Coe 4 May 2010
Entertaining and good natured
Intelligent and well-mannered, Jarlath seems the kind of approachable dude you could imagine having a beer with (and no, that’s not just because he’s Irish). He has a way about him which is friendly, sincere and instantly believable. [more]

CLAUDIA O’DOHERTY: MONSTER OF THE DEEP 3D (AUS) at Club Ivy, The Garden Club, 13B Dixon St
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 4 May 2010
Completely fruit loopy idea is genius
In the world of the comedy festival, stand up is the primary solo genre. Every now and then however, there is a solo show that defies genrifying. Like Toby Hadoke’s Moths Ate My Dr Who Scarf last year, Claudia O’Doherty’s Monster of the Deep 3D tries something completely different. [more]

JIMEOIN: SOMETHING... SMELLS FUNNY (IRE / AUST) at Opera House
reviewed by Simon Sweetman (The Dominion Post) 3 May 2010
Word-perfect routine a charming insult
His rambling style, a mix of over-the-top physical comedy and observational humour, is easy enough to like – but it's certainly not stretching comedy's bounds. To see him essentially repeat the material, still making it look so very off-the-cuff, is borderline insulting. [more]

COMEDY DIVAS 2010 at Paramount
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 3 May 2010
A taste of things to come
The Paramount’s main theatre is a very comfortable place to view comedy. It gives an impression of a cosy night out with the girls, and women definitely comprise most of the audience for Comedy Divas. The humour on offer however is not always cosy and has plenty of pointy bits to amuse. [more]

THE BEST OF THE BILLYS 2010 at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Karyn Cushen 2 May 2010
A mixed night
The night began fantastically with MC Ben Hurley entertaining the audience, which included, of course, the witty interrogation of all latecomers and the denigration of Americans. In a word, Ben Hurley was fantastic ... [more]

LATE LAUGHS (WELLINGTON) at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 2 May 2010
Rolling together with well warmed up comedians
A truer cross section of Kiwi comics [plus English MC] you couldn’t hope to find. Zoe Lyons worked the audience with lightning repartee. An audience as hyped as this one could have gotten out of hand but this gal knows how to get people on side and working with her. [more]
