Subtle and often ironic sense of humour and timing If you’re a fan of nostalgia and a good harmony then this might just be the ideal way for you to spend your late-afternoon for one of the next two Saturdays. [more] |
![]() JIMEOIN: SOMETHING... SMELLS FUNNY (IRE / AUST) at Opera House reviewed by Phoebe Smith 1 May 2010 |
Universally accessible and non-divisive A combination of narrative and observational comedy together with some hilarious half-arsed mime and facial expressions that could be seen from the moon delights the crowd at the nearly full Opera House. [more] |

Sheer pizzazz As perky as they come, this sparkling concoction, adroitly directed by Ross Gumbley, is whipped up from slick quips and a screwball romantic plot line in equal parts. As in the best cocktails, the blend is smoothly balanced and the result is a heady experience. [more] |
![]() TE RADAR’S EATING THE DOG at SKYCITY Theatre reviewed by Nik Smythe 1 May 2010 |
Riveting hilarity Once again Andrew ‘Te Radar’ Lumsden, now famous from the telly, excavates a veritable mine (field) of the kind of gritty, determined, certifiable lunatics and hapless, well-meaning morons that he believes are the backbone of what makes New Zil’nd the nation it is today. [more] |

Tied up in ropes and told to swim It’s rookie improv night at the Maidment’s Musgrove Studio: the final night tonight (May 1st) and it’s sold out! Rightly so, as the graduates of the Art of Improvisation workshop series deliver an energetic, slapdash hour of fun. [more] |

We leave a few worries lighter Southside Comedy has a sizeable venue to cater to the multitude of Comedy enthusiasts out to laugh off the week’s stress and trials. |
Weekly guess always a bargain We are not told expressly who has chosen these comedians to be ‘the best’, but the evening functions largely as a pleasant 90 minutes of advertising as most give us titbits from their respective solo shows in the hope that we’ll be tempted to come along for the full serving. ![]() THE GLORIOUS SKY AWESOMES at BATS reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 29 Apr 2010 |
Pie-in-sky look at space race There’s funny ha-ha and there’s funny peculiar. The Glorious Sky Awesomes hasa bit of both but it’s mostly funny peculiar because it seems strange to me that time has been spent on telling a crazy, fantastical, and pie-in-the-sky version of the Russian and American space race in the 50s and 60s without making any satirical point about either the race or the competitors or indeed anything at all. ![]() HOLMES ALONE! (NZ) at Circa Two reviewed by Hannah Smith 29 Apr 2010 |
Sparks off audience from solid grasp of source material and vernacular A one man hour long improv show is an ambitious project, and I must admit that beforehand I had concerns regarding how on earth it was going to work. My fears were needless. Greg Ellis is as excellent an improviser as Sherlock Holmes is a detective. [more] |
