Big questions re-pondered in non-sentimental approach Warmly received by the opening night audience, this piece confirms Gary Henderson’s ability to extract significant truths from the minutiae of familiar Kiwi experience ... The play explores the responses of three generations to that saddest of times when the oldest must move away from home and into professional care. [more] |

Adds up to less than the sum of its parts despite some riveting moments Billed in publicity as a prequel to site-specific’s much lauded Hotel (although the programme says the opposite), the much-anticipated Salon invites inevitable comparison. [more] |

Maybe it all made sense once … This one belongs in the WTF? category, not because it defies categorisation (it is Theatre) but because whatever it is about or means is something the production fails to share with its audience. “I have no idea what was going on,” was a common comment in the foyer following the opening performance. Feel-good experience but there could be more at stake The Roger Hall name makes us anticipate frothy Friday night fun and a liberal sprinkling of baby-boomer sex jokes. Both are present but there is still something left wanting. Over two and a half hours we watch the mundane realities of Barry’s and Gen’s marriage give way to increasing moments of friction ... Too embarrassing There are two adjectives describing shows I am beginning to dread as an audience goer: “devised” and “experimental”. To understand their meaning, do not go to a dictionary, Reader, for what is written there will not help you at all. Classic comedy technique shines through From the opening number that leads directly to the big revelation, there are no illusions held here that this show is going to be anything but rude, loud, blatant, lewd, downright dirty and bloody funny. If you're not up for it then leave right now ... [more] |

Honesty and depth of feeling An exercise in verbatim theatre – replicating another person’s speech and action exactly word for word – it is just as the title suggests, relating back to the audience words from interviews they have conducted previously. [more] |

Intentions honoured in intensifying drama ... All hinges, however, on the text and the way the characters and their scenes are played out and I am happy to say every member of Marwick’s cast has a clear understanding of their intentions and a secure trust in both the Bard’s language and our capacity to ‘get it’ without their having to overstate the message or ‘camp up’ their roles. Ambitious opus needs more joie de vivre The story seeks to engage the timeless themes of passion, romance and betrayal. Comic blend of deadpan and lively All settled in, the feisty duo of Sarah Harpur and Jim Stanton launch into their spoof title song; a lifestyle segment on TV giving handy household hints. Last year’s Raw Comedy Quest winners, the two women know how to endear themselves to the audience and get the chuckles, giggles and belly laughs out. [more] |
