TROUBLE ON THE WATERFRONT: LIVE at The Ruby Lounge, Bond Street
reviewed by Maryanne Cathro 18 Feb 2010
Evoking tingling connections to the past
Now if there’s one thing I love more than theatre, it’s folk music in all its many forms, and this show is a real treat … This show is the highlight of my Fringe experience to date by a landslide. [more]

APHELION at BATS
reviewed by Hannah Smith 17 Feb 2010
Enchanting work moves from soothing to spine-chilling
Chiming clocks, trembling trees and unnerving dolls dancing, Aphelion is a ‘musical installation’ combining cello, puppetry and projection into a bewitching and dreamlike theatre experience. [more]

CLOSER at Basement Theatre
reviewed by Lillian Richards 17 Feb 2010
New company falls short of its ideals
Redmond Barry Theatre Company’s first effort is a bold choice. This is a play which is both complex and simple; the staging is minimal and begs interpretation, the script is ribald, humorous and confronting, the perfection of this play rests on the natural fluidity of those performing it and RBTC’s production has moments of this nature. THE IMMORTALS at Bats Pit Bar
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 17 Feb 2010
Slevin passes with flying colours
Whether or not he is what he claims to be, immortal, Martin Amis’ character is far seeing and his pessimism well founded, based on human history. Theatre doesn’t get more in your face than this production ... [more]

IN REVERSE at Betty’s Bar, Blair Street
reviewed by Lyne Pringle 17 Feb 2010
The final road trip to no more band
Betty’s Bar with very good-looking bar staff; multiple video screens count us down to show time. A solo man on guitar in the video – live man on drums plays along with the projected images throughout the performance. The sound is hissy and boomy making it hard to appreciate the music ... [more]

reviewed by John Smythe 17 Feb 2010
Childhood collides with young adulthood
Festooned within to suggest an aquarium, with cushions for us to sit on, the Happy Healthy You! truck is destined to play a significant role, as a resonator, shall we say, of the dramas that play out. [more]

Unsettling experiment
During 1971 a rather controversially experiment was undertaken by a Psychology Professor in America to explore human behaviour in a prison situation. It became known as the Stamford Experiment with similarities in later years to the Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse scandal. [more]

On the other side of the world and in the middle of NZ’s maiden test series against South Africa, player Bob Blair learns his young fiancé has been killed in the infamous 1953 Tangiwai train disaster. SIR JOHN FALSTAFF AND THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR at Gladstone Vinyard
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 16 Feb 2010
Knight’s quest for wealth full of laughs
Written as pure entertainment with no heavy or hidden meaning or insights into the humour condition - “ a crazy sitcom”, as Lawrence calls it in his programme notes – the play lends itself admirably to Lawrence’s style of directing. [more]
