reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 9 Aug 2010
Troupe is full of bad taste and proud of it
What must be one of the worst semi-professional dance troupes is currently performing their show The Fierceness at Downstage. [more]

Character-driven comedy of mortality with a twist
My biggest problem is with the venue. The duo is swallowed up to some degree in the Skycity auditorium and the amplified speech is distracting and disengaging. [more]

The moment is everything
GREASE The Musical provides a vivid but brief chronicle of the last year of high school for a couple of dozen mostly working class kids in small town America, circa 1959. [more]

Livened-up Grease delivers as rock’n’roll rides high
Summer nights at Rydell High seem a long way from the drizzly misery of an Auckland winter but Grease is all about shaking off humdrum cares and tapping into that deep nostalgia for an uncomplicated world where rock'n'roll rules and teenage romance fills the air. [more]

When the house of cards called family collapses …
So why is Penny, a young adult daughter who has gone to the trouble of writing a song in celebration of her mother’s 50th birthday, so awkward and embarrassed when she comes to sing it to her own ukulele accompaniment? [more]

Made for loving, baby
What can you say about a show that sells out its season – albeit just 3 nights of it, but at Downstage this time, not Bats – before it even opens? Since they first formed in 2005, The Real Hot Bitches have developed a strong following that arguably exceeds the friends and whanau of the 30-odd performers plus creative, production and backstage crew that make up this year’s team. Complex and exotic tales danced with compelling charm and beauty

Confronting mortality with Panych
Of course I ‘know’ the very famous Dame Kate Harcourt and David McPhail ONZM, but I’d never heard of Morris Panych. Until last night, when I went to see Auntie and Me in New Plymouth’s TSB Showplace. It turns out Panych is Canadian and is partial to exploring last, lingering moments of life. [more]
