DOG STAR!!! at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Stephen Austin 10 May 2012
Unique approaches to performing
Brian (Graham Candy) and Jesse (Jeremy Randerson) are flatmates and classmates, studying for a degree in guidance counselling, who keep each other sane by debating universal truths in the comfort of their kitchen. They’re studying hard towards graduation and pushing each other to make sure they’re ready for the big day. [more]

DOLLY MIXTURE at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave

A rip roaring ride
Innocent and socially awkward virgin Crispin Merriweather (Thomas Sainsbury) arrives at the house-as-a-homestay of doll collector and satanic alchemist Beverley Bridgewater (Yvette Parsons). He seems happy enough with his new digs, despite his new landlady’s passion for dolls, her glittery black eyes and demented demeanour. [more]

Gross-out Dolly Horror
Thomas Sainsbury and Yvette Parsons’s previous work together typically tend to features unsavory oddballs, extracting comedy from social awkwardness and character eccentricities. This style is once again at play in Dolly Mixture in which the premise sees Crispin Merriweather (Sainsbury) boarding at the residence of Beverly Beavington (Parsons) who restores dolls as her hobby. Gruesome, smart, stupid, splendid: a thoroughly revolting romp!
A great show has certain signs for me: I don't look at my watch, the time races by, the end comes too soon and of course, I desperately want a) more and b) to see it all over again. Dolly Mixture is such a show, and so much more. [more]

DOLORES at BATS

Questions left for us to ponder
At 35 minutes short, a play can get away with offering little more than a slice of life as lived by some people. Dolores does have dramatic structure, of the peel-things-back-to-discover-what’s-already-so variety. And what is revealed does change the relationship between the two sisters who comprise the cast. But it feels like the first act of a larger drama. [more]

Comedy to melodrama
Though it is advertised as a comedy, the very short two-hander Dolores was probably best described by an American critic as ‘a Dramady’. Edward Allen Baker has given his two sisters some funny lines and he establishes a tense, at times humorous, relationship between these two seemingly different working-class women. [more]

Violent comedy
How can this be – a comedy about domestic violence? That’s the byline to this 24 year old play and back then maybe it was shocking and maybe it was funny too. The core issue is still relevant, hell, our eyes these days are much more open when it comes to violence in the home. [more]

DOMINION ROAD STORIES at DOMINION ROAD

Celebrating the songs, dances and stories of yesteryear
Yet the charming chaos that comes when an ambitious vision is full of wonderful moments, but simply under-rehearsed as a whole, just doesn’t seem to matter, or bother the friendly crowd. It is an occasion where, after each item, those on stage look and react with as much enthusiasm and delight, as those in the audience. [more]

Loud and proud fusion of theatre and local communities
After last night’s one-off ‘Come Dancing’, my immersion into ATC / AUT / Auckland Arts Festival’s co-pro, Dominion Road Stories (DRS), continues on a wet and windy St Patrick’s Day. [more]
