A LION IN THE MEADOW AND OTHER STORIES at The Pumphouse, Takapuna
reviewed by Lexie Matheson 23 Jul 2011
Mahy magic wins the day
Mahy and Bray, then, are already quite a formidable duo and rightly so, as Mahy writes wonderfully performable stories and Bray has a feel for the magic of childhood and a gift for theatrical creation that can only exist in a man who has never truly grown up … and bless him for that! [more]

A LOVE TAIL at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 24 Feb 2010
Skilfully co-ordinated creativity
Devised theatre can achieve excellence and A Love Tail proves it. Inspired – along with thousands of other stories – by Romeo and Juliet’s ‘star-crossed lovers’, this puts a twist in the tale by inverting it: we know long before they do each is not what the other thinks. And in the end … [more]

Winning performances
A devised oddity at Bats this week, about a cat and a dog, who represent the human male and female, in an hour-long vehicle, so the programme states, “for looking at societies’ conventions through a light hearted tale”. [more]

A MAN WALKS INTO A BAR at Good Luck Bar (basement, 126 Cuba Mall)
reviewed by John Smythe 20 Nov 2006
Theatre of enigma and intrigue
An audience walks into a bar. They’ve come alone, in pairs or in small groups, expecting a play. So as they buy drinks and gather at small tables in the space beyond one end of the basement bar, they become an audience, in waiting ... [more]

Needs work?
David Geary’s short experimental play A Man Walks Into a Bar is performed in a bar, which works, but the play itself needs work. It’s not quite one thing nor the other. Much of it sees the actors telling variations of a man / woman / crocodile/ horse walks in to a bar and says… [more]

Sharp, slick precision
Its obvious that with a title like A Man Walked into a Bar that the only logical venue would be a bar and the Goodluck Bar in Cuba Street is an ideal venue for this tightly scripted and excellently performed two-hander that looks at the types of people that come into a bar. [more]

A MAN WALKS INTO A BAR at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave

Gags used to create dada-esque portrait of two lives
... It’s clear is that these two have known each other for a long time, spent a good deal of that time drinking to excess, and appear to be attempting to utilise the comic format to somehow put their tumultuous and estranged relationship into perspective. [more]

A MEMORY, A MONOLOGUE, A RANT AND A PRAYER: WRITINGS TO STOP VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN AND GIRLS at Meow, Edward St CBD
reviewed by John Smythe 29 Apr 2012
A curiously uplifting 'entertainment'
It's not part of the comedy festival but A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and A Prayer, written by world-renowned authors and playwrights, and performed by our own actors and politicians, is insightful, true, moving, amusing and only on three times (Sat, Sun, Mon); the maximum allowed for a V-Day Event. A MIDSUMMER MESS at Whammy Bar, St Kevin’s Arcade, K' Road
reviewed by Anna Stillaman 28 Feb 2013
Unashamedly silly
The play promises to be fast moving and there’s no doubt that the actors are moving quickly. Unfortunately, the audience are left bewildered. I missed a lot of what was being said; it was all happening too fast. [more]
