DROWNING IN VERONICA LAKE at TSB Showplace
reviewed by Ngaire Riley 5 Jun 2012
Lost in a lake of self pity
Veronica Lake was a real person. A Hollywood siren who died in 1973. I don’t know this as I take my seat. There she stands – the golden tresses, the hand on the hip, the bare back almost to the waist, and the luscious long dress beautifully lit with a golden glow. [more]

DROWNING IN VERONICA LAKE at Dance Studio, Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts
reviewed by Gail Pittaway 24 Jun 2012
Sham glam triumph
She was a blonde bombshell, a model, an actress, an aviatrix and even sang soft sleepy numbers in her films, although the first confession the screen idol makes in this fine piece of solo acting, is that she was never allowed to do her own singing. [more]

Talent oozes through tangled web
Drowning in Veronica Lake returns in triumph to the Auckland stage. Performing in a luminous lake of white fabric, Alex Ellis is centre stage trapped in this glorious ‘dress’ tracing the luscious, scandalous, tragic and moving life of the 40s screen siren Veronica Lake. The blonde bombshell with the lock of hair covering her right eye! [more]

The Fame Monster
There’s commentary within this show about the difference between celebrity and stardom. Celebrity is flash in the pan stuff. Stardom is enduring. You counted. People remember. Movie femme fatale Veronica Lake has the ingredients for stardom – a troubled back-story, ambition, a face that lights up the screens. She was very much a screen celebrity of the 1940s. But a star? DU BIST EIN UBER SHOW! at The Church, 50 Dundas Street
reviewed by Patrick Davies 19 Mar 2011
Deceit, clues and wilful misdirection with no holds barred
The cast work extremely well together. Long range formats require a lot of listening and retention of information, not only from the audience but from each other as the larger story is woven together. Everyone’s ears are open here and it there is a wobble, they support while still gently ribbing for the minor infraction. [more]

DUALITY at ARTWORKS, 2 Korora Rd, Oneroa
reviewed by Johnny Givins 3 Mar 2013
Like an Escher Drawing where the down staircase is really going up
Duality uses the device of the doctor-patient relationship as the dramatic pivot. Patterson plays the doctor /scientific researcher trying to pin down the dreams and sparks of creativity of the marvellous, naïve and talented Forrest Denize’s Psych patient. [more]

DUCK, DEATH AND THE TULIP at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by John Smythe 19 Mar 2013
Entrancing storytelling with impeccable puppetry
Death is something all children ask about eventually, either as an abstract idea, or because a grandparent or pet has died. Maybe it comes from questioning where their food comes from – or whether dead flowers go “to heaven” too? Even if they are spared something unexpected and tragic happening close to their lives, it may come up through listening to or watching the news. [more]

DUDE ... I'M A UNICORN & OTHER SHORT STORIES at Bluenote Bar
reviewed by John Smythe 20 Feb 2007
Bizarre, darkening, intriguing
More than just a stand up comedy show, Derek Flores’s Dude I’m A Unicorn is a recovery exercise in make believe; in storytelling simply as a means of expanding our imaginations beyond the mundane or even the deeply meaningful. [more]

DUET: FALLING IN LOVE…AGAIN + OFFICE FYI: A MUSICAL at Mary Newton Gallery, 150 Vivian St

One plot lost, a fantastic treat discovered
It’s not a bad idea at all ... What a treat!! Funny, poignant and a very cleverly crafted piece of musical theatre. [more]

DUETS at Fortune Theatre
reviewed by Terry MacTavish 22 Feb 2009
Our perpetual hunt for someone who will understand us
Duets, the Fortune’s first offering for the year, is a good-humoured and polished production: a series of five comic vignettes, taking a light-hearted look at relationships between the sexes. With cheery lines like ‘his belly is his own, but his hair is not’, it is unashamedly aimed at baby-boomers. [more]
