AANANDA – THE DANCE OF JOY at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Sharon Matthews 20 Mar 2012
Singular artistry
Aananda - The Dance of Joy is a moment out of time, classical Indian dance at its very best, lyrical, evocative and visually and musically expressive. Unni takes and transforms the rich traditions of Bharatanatyam and Kuchupudi classical dance forms with her own distinctive choreography, revealing the fresh contemporariness of an ancient art form. A Play In Need of Its Own Treatment
We live in an age of sexual liberation: where mutual attempts to disentangle emotional and physical expressions of love are treated as an act of empowerment – friends with benefits, no strings attached. But whether they can be separated is another question altogether, and this is a focal point of Auckland Theatre Company’s latest production, In the Next Room or The Vibrator Play. [more]

THE MĀORI TROILUS AND CRESSIDA - TOROIHI RĀUA KO KĀHIRA at Te Papa Amphitheatre
reviewed by Paul Diamond 20 Mar 2012
An awe-inspiring marvel
Shakespeare’s ‘problem play’ explores the costs of love and war, and works well in a Mäori setting. A well-known whakataukï (proverb) came to mind while I was watching the performance: He wahine, he whenua, e ngaro ai te tangata. (By women and land, men are lost.) [more]

NYC THREE SHORT BALLETS FROM THE BIG APPLE at Regent Theatre
reviewed by Hannah Molloy 19 Mar 2012
Ballet that makes you marvel
In three pieces, NYC is all about the city it is named for - fast, gritty, doesn’t stop, is always changing and new and different, vibrant... the descriptors are endless and entirely appropriate. If this is RNZB Artistic Director Ethan Stiefel’s first year of programming, New Zealand is in for some very good ballet times ahead. [more]

Like a delicious layer cake
Comedy Intelligence Agency (CIA)’s Improsaurus strike gold once again in this extremely funny and entertaining show which also has the added attraction of taking the piss out of improvisers. [more]

CALENDAR GIRLS at Court Theatre, Bernard Street, Addington

Hilarity attends spirited cast
If warm and spontaneous applause on opening night are anything to go by, The Court has found another winner in this adaptation of the screenplay, itself based on a gutsy real-life fundraising project by the Yorkshire Women's Institute, for the care of leukaemia sufferers. [more]

IN THE NEXT ROOM (OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY) at Maidment

Dense, witty, sharp, insightful and pushes the boundaries
It’s always been true that opposites, like magnets, attract and repel just as violently, and the drama brought about by the juxtaposition of two different forces always makes for great drama; reason and emotion, science and art, private and public, male and female, birth and death. [more]

BIRDS at Mangere Arts Centre

Dynamic physical theatre
The primary power of this play is with the acting. It transports the story as it dances, prances, jumps and shouts. The performers thrust the narrative in your face, like graffiti, like the wail of a siren, like a good hiding and even like a rock-filled poi! [more]

THE FICKLE FINGER OF FATE at Fortune Theatre Studio
reviewed by Terry MacTavish 17 Mar 2012
The funny, charming, mad logic of clowning
Still reeling from the news that Dunedin must throw yet more appalling amounts of cash at our inept Rugby Union, I stagger into the Fortune to have my hurt healed by The Fickle Finger of Fate. Thank Heaven for the Arts, and Fringe Fest for bringing us these fabulous artists of physical comedy. [more]

Real, Raw and Revealing
It was like déjà vu arriving at The Mangere Arts Centre, from Avondale, only to be thrust back into the thick of my own neighbourhood. [more]
