EN ROUTE - COME TO at Fale Pasifika, University of Auckland
reviewed by Anna Bate 2 Sep 2012
Exceptionally varied and well-programmed
That was in tents, is the puntastic title of Kelly Nash’s new work. A playful choreography performed by a quietly attentive group of five dancers: Georgie Goater, Jessie McCall, Molly McDowell, Lydia Zanetti and Lydia Bittner-Baird. The louder performers in this work are jandals and tents. These objects are animated as the dancers pass through a series of tasks in relation to them. I enjoy this shift in focus from human bodies to the liveliness and personalities of objects. I was excited to see a work that prioritizes and investigates the choreographic potential of other material bodies within the frame of En-route. They were becoming tents. I feel that there is more scope for play and experimentation with this work and that this will easily emerge as the performers become more familiar with their materials. [more]

EN ROUTE - GO TO at Kenneth Myers Centre, Shortland Street

Dances bring building alive with theatrical ambience
The first of this series, Go To, explores themes of “finality, ending, moving-on and fare-welling” and is presented as ambulatory theatre with the audience members invited to view works in the various rooms of the magnificent Kenneth Myers Centre in Shortland St. Once a radio and television recording studio the building is alive with theatrical ambience and provides many interesting and varied settings for the works. EN ROUTE - IN TO at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre

Thematic links act as stepping stones
Some of the works come fully-formed but several appear to be first-drafts of ideas that will bear future development. As in the first series, Sean Curham’s lighting design is a major factor in creating a cohesive continuity to the works. [more]

EN-TOUR-AGE / ENHANCED FORMULA at Repertory Theatre
reviewed by Mark James Hamilton 24 Sep 2007
Crisp, pared, yet purposeful actions
Unitec’s work is fresh, considered and reflective. At its best moments the show has naked honesty and a quiet confidence. En-tour-age (soon to be Enhanced Formula) is a collection of short pieces by twelve graduating choreographers. The discrete items reveal the company’s distinct artistic signatures, while shared vocabulary and choreographic devices link the works to create a coherent whole. [more]

END GAME at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by John Smythe 31 Jul 2010
Physical and emotional territories navigated with great skill
As directed by Leo Gene Peters, End Game by Kate Morris and Rachel Callinan stages a highly technological cyberspace concept with great ingenuity in real physical space, abetted by Nathan McKendry’s brilliant lighting of Brian King’s deceptively simple box and fabric set to Gareth Farr’s stirring music [more]

END GAME at Downstage Theatre

Fine 21st century fantasy
Alice went down a rabbit hole to Wonderland because she couldn’t see the point of reading a book without pictures or conversations; just before she went through the looking-glass she played a game of chess. That was 19th century fantasy. [more]

END GAME at Downstage Theatre

Tech addicts
What’s refreshing about this story for young people that’s full of Facebook and on-line gaming and pop culture references, is that the storytelling techniques are beautifully low-tech. A swamp is created by two people manipulating a large sheet and Nathan McKendry’s clever lighting ... [more]

END GAME at Isaac Theatre Royal

Polished and imaginative production
A veritable cornucopia of positive observations come to mind in response to this inventive production, none of them more sincerely recorded than 'welcome'. A solid cohort of eleven and twelve year olds, emerging from the disruptions of the Christchurch earthquake, entered the fantasy offered by Capital E with understandable relish. [more]

END OF THE RAINBOW at SKYCITY Theatre
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 12 Nov 2007
Energy, flair and failing health: a triumph
Since seeing The New Zealand Post season of End of the Rainbow on Friday night, I’ve had Garland’s infectious hit, 'Get Happy' buzzing round and round in my head ... Unlike many of today’s over night ‘stars’ and tabloid celebrities, (some famous just for being famous), this diminutive Hollywood icon paid her dues over and over and over again ... [more]

ENGAGED at Michael Fowler Centre Foyer, Ladies Toilets
reviewed by John Smythe 21 Feb 2008
Dodgy dealings in public convenience
Only at the Fringe could I find myself lurking in the Ladies Loo – a spacious amenity at the Michael Fowler Centre – to witness variously nefarious interactions in the company of strangers. [more]
