Stage sex and language Forty years on, Joe Orton’s play remains a cautionary tale – about greed, lack of morality, power, violence and perversity. It kicks you in the guts, just as Sloane does poor old Dada. And it makes us realize that post war Britain and 21st century New Zealand aren’t as far apart as we might like to think. [more] |

Entertaining, at a cost of depth Given the reaction to the opening night performance of the Circa Studio’s latest production one could be forgiven for thinking the title was Entertaining An Audience rather than Orton’s Entertaining Mr Sloane. This full on, highly energetic and at times frenzied production of probably Orton’s best known plays pushes the comedy aspects of the play to its limits and beyond ... [more] |

Entertaining Orton: Circa has successfully tapped into the zeitgeist What is it about the times we live in that makes the plays of Joe Orton, written over 40 years ago, so relevant? Circa’s mostly excellent production of Entertaining Mr Sloane comes hot on the heels of a highly successful run of the play, starring Imelda Staunton, in London ... [more] |

Fantastic elements still developing In short, EA&AE offer a wonderful performance ---- something of a must see in the Fringe for those interested in dance. But the work also still needs further development to reach its full potential. EA&AE’s ongoing international tours should help develop that. [more] |

Thrill in frenzy We have heard of “Who Dunnits,” but this is more of a “Why did he do it?” Told about an horrific act carried out by a disturbed young man that shocked local magistrates, playwright Peter Shaffer was inspired to “...create a mental world in which the deed could be made comprehensible.” [more] |

Raw talent and commitment produces gripping triumph Members of the Long Cloud Youth Theatre group throw themselves into Peter Shaffer’s psychodrama Equus with courage and conviction, gripping the audience with their stripped back production of the modern classic. Performing such a complex play with non-professional actors and a limited budget is a challenge, but Wassenaar and his cast more than rise to it. [more] |

NZ International Arts Festival ERARITJARITJAKA at Westpac St James reviewed by John Smythe (John Smythe: theatre reviews) 1 Mar 2006 |

Audience abuzz German director Heiner Gobbels’ Eraritjaritjaka is based on texts by Nobel Prize winner for Literature Elias Canetti. Bulgaria-born, Vienna-raised, Paris then London-domiciled, Canetti purloined the title from Arunta, an Australian Aboriginal dialect. It means, ‘Full of desire for something lost.’ Its brief Opera House season soon over (just 4 performances in the first 3 days), Eraritjaritjaka remains in the memory as prime Festival fare. Worth the brain effort An hour and a half of ideas is a lot for a brain to take in but it’s absolutely worth the effort. What about the species of animal that the rise of man prevented from evolving? Or what about "to speak as if were the last sentence allowed you"? Esoteric, unique & complex ... probably one of the most visually creative and innovative pieces of theatre to come to a Festival in a long while. It is however very esoteric and probably incomprehensible to most of those who go to see it but this doesn’t detract from the uniqueness of the production.
