Dunedin Fringe 2012
PICCOLO COR at Mary Hopewell Theatre
reviewed by Hannah Molloy 16 Mar 2012
Panche filled Fringe opening
Piccolo Cor is a work many will identify with, as it describes the anxiety of being alone and misunderstood and what that means - "There are five people in my life..." - to laying bare one's soul to another and accepting their foibles and allowing them to accept yours. [more]

BE GLAD YOU’RE NEUROTIC at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Jennifer Aitken 16 Mar 2012
Somewhat pointless?
Neurotic people are better than ordinary people. To be normal is to be mundane. The neurotic thinks deeply about life. One must harness one's neurosis and use it like a superpower! This is what you will learn if attend Be Glad You’re Neurotic at the Dunedin Fringe Festival. [more]

Hine 2012 - performance as action, activism and critique
Three moments to fall in love with. Tru’s half naked lip-syncing with the policeman puppet upstage and boil- up date with invited guest from the audience happening in the foreground, bahaha, brilliant, wow. Cat’s squatted humping in heels an endurance test with intense statements about the sacred and the mundane. The hair is shooting energy into space like an emergency flare, I’m scared. The electric unplugged fans and ethno-erotic mash-up hip unison duet, a feeling of soft focus lighting and hair flying lulls us. The romance is killing me, god I love this. But the prize for the most-talked-about moment in the show goes to ... [more]

MY DINNER WITH DICK at Fortune Theatre Studio

A wasted opportunity

COFFEE WITH EELCO at Alleluya Bar and Café
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 16 Mar 2012
An extraordinary story about a delightful man
Nelson born and raised actor/writer/director Grae Burton has co-created (with Tim Coughlin) an interesting one-man-play, based on the life and times of one of Nelson’s most famous characters: coffee house owner, Eelco Boswijk. Given that Grae launched his acting career in Chez Eelco, his full-length work is very personalised, with more than one nostalgic 'life imitating art, imitating life, imitating art' moment. [more]

ZOMBURLESQUE at Sammy's Entertainment Venue
reviewed by Jonathan W. Marshall 16 Mar 2012
A fine show for those with a taste for it
There is a lot more than sex going on here, to be sure, but be in no doubt: sex is at its core, and the women do a fine job of disporting themselves in ways both subtle and explicit. [more]

A must-see for anyone interested in what we can now muster in New Zealand
Hohepa is an event to be celebrated inNew Zealand theatre. It is a collective, decisive step forward in terms of how a bi-cultural society can conceive of and create itself. And it has a prismatic, rich beauty. [more]

MICHAEL JAMES MANAIA at Centrepoint
reviewed by John Ross 16 Mar 2012
A performance of huge variety, subtlety, inventiveness and energy
Portraying one Maori man’s life, this is also an exposure of the horrific impacts of warfare upon the lives of those involved in the on-the-ground fighting, whereby even the men who come home alive and without visible wound-injuries are all-too-often damaged for the rest of their lives. [more]

A PLAY ABOUT LOVE at BATS

Experience more than just pleasure
A Play about Love has at its heart one relationship between a girl who makes snow globes and a stationer who jots brief snippets – including text messages – on post-it notes. [more]
