EX_ISLE OF STRANGERS at Mâtiu-Somes Island
reviewed by John Smythe 18 Apr 2010
Healing the hurts of history
Described as “the point of departure” for the work, Matiu Somes Island is where we arrive, via East West Ferry, to engage with the outcome of their devised theatre process. Spanning three and a half hours from leaving and returning to Queens Wharf, it treats us to a range of site-specific evocations of the island’s history expressed in forms inspired by the Michael Chekhov Technique, Te Whare Tapere (pre-European Maori performing arts) and Japanese Noh theatre ... EYE OF A DANCER at BATS

Shining talents
Most young girls train to be a ballerina or a contemporary dancer and after years of practice abandon it to focus on study and get real jobs in the real world. With the huge following and popularity in music, film and culture, not many take that extra step to devise, produce and direct their own Hip Hop show. [more]

Crown taken from humming to fizzing
They say they “eat, drink and breathe dance.” That’s a big call but as Eye of a Dancer starts, you get the sense that it’s not just big talk to sell seats. The atmosphere in the Globe is humming; an almost capacity audience waiting to see the young women who call themselves Seek perform. [more]

ARTHOUSE CULTURE-CUM-BAWDY BOUDOIR FOLLIES
After some frustration trying to follow the songs, only to find it drowned out by the band and enunciated with less than the crispness required to let such rapid-fire olden-style verse be comprehended, I gave in and just let the many other media elements entertain me - films and visual projections on the large muslin back curtain, technical props such as an on-stage swing, twisted music and some fairly decent lighting ... Two of our finest: a double shot of integrity, experience and talent
The NZ Comedy Festival 2013 brochure suggests that we ‘join Fairly Funny for a lunch time of comedy about something serious.’ The serious stuff relates to the work of Fairtrade Australia New Zealand and the comedy is provided by The Fairtrade Avengers Michele A’Court and Jeremy Elwood. Not that Michele and Jeremy call themselves The Fairtrade Avengers and Fairtrade ANZ don’t either... [more]

FAIRY GODFATHER at Circa Two

Can do better – probably will
I venture to suggest The Improvisors’ Fairy Godfather can only get better following its second outing on this opening day. First point: it really is not necessary to shout at children to keep them interested, especially in Circa Two which is not the Opera House. [more]

Spontaneity and irritation
Many fairy tales have as one of the central characters a Fairy Godmother. However for their school holiday production Fairy Godfather, The Improvisors have gone for a story about a Fairy Godfather trying to take over the role of Fairy Godmother. [more]

FAIRY STORIES at Circa Two

Fairy tales for kids are nothing like this
Fairy Stories is outrageously camp, glitteringly garish, dazzlingly costumed, and in the finale probably sacrilegious, when decorum, taste and refinement are vanquished in a riot of dance, flashing lights and a loud Lady Gaga song. [more]

A sheer torrent of unstoppable talent
The show is hilarious, breathtakingly costumed, made with mighty loads of mickey, and will have you rolling in your ribs. Jon Trimmer is having a ball, Louis Solino is his intriguing enigmatic self, and Paul is up and out and away. [more]
