I AIN'T NOTHING BUT / A GLIMMER IN THE DARK, SHE SAID at Shed 11
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 18 Oct 2006
Go with the flow
Two separate but related plays, one scripted, the other devised, playing simultaneously for 35 minutes on adjoining stages is the first of the two offerings in this year’s STAB season of experimental theatre. [more]

This year’s graduation production for the third year acting students as well as the entertainment technology, performing arts management and performance design students is a knock out. [more]

THE UNDERARM at Circa Two
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 30 Oct 2006
Actors keep their eyes on the ball
... David Geary and Justin Gregory have fashioned a raucous comedy set on the embankment of the Basin Reserve (look for the Basin’s code of behaviour above the door to Circa 2) where two brothers, Don and Colin, meet to watch a test match, relive and put on trial the Chappell incident, and along the way poke fun at Transtasman feuding, national stereotypes, cricket personalities of the time, their own dysfunctional family and sibling rivalry. TOP GIRLS at Studio 77, VUW
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 4 Nov 2006
Themes shine through
Top Girls, Caryl Churchill’s famous 1982 play about the cost to women who reach the summits of the male-dominated hierarchy of business, has been described as essentially not one but three excellent short plays all contributing to her central theme. [more]

ARCANE at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 13 Nov 2006
Oracle leaves it to us
Fortified by a small glass of mead, the audience (limited to 28 for each performance) of arcane is taken on an intriguing tour of an old house, but on the way it will pass between and behind the walls, through mysterious tunnels, up a ladder, and over floorboards through which it may occasionally glimpse a young woman ... DRACULA at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 13 Nov 2006
There is only one Dracula
You can keep you Bela Lugosis, your Vincent Prices, your Christopher Lees and the all the rest of the vampire actors and would-be Draculas. From now on there is only one Dracula for me ... [more]

GOLDEN BOYS at Circa Two
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 30 Jan 2006
Entertaining, wrenching and convoluted
Golden Boys, a play that deals with the murder in Christchurch in 1989 of 12-year old Keith Borstal which sends ripples of fear, confusion and a premonition of violent death amongst three young people not concerned with the crime in any way, first appeared at Bats back in 2004. Then it lasted 50-minutes and had a cast of three actors playing eight characters. Now, in a revamped version at Circa Studio, it has been expanded to about 75 minutes with a cast of five actors playing eleven characters. [more]

ROGER HALL'S ALADDIN - THE PANTOMIME at Circa One
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 21 Nov 2006
Capital twist on ancient tale
Roger Hall’s take on the ancient tale of Aladdin is set in old Araby which appears to be at the top of Cuba Street because young Aladdin is described as the boy from Cuba Mall and he is constantly warned by his mother Widow Twankey to look out for the Bucket Fountain. [more]

TURBINE at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 2 Dec 2006
A welcome gust of stimulation
If you thought it was about time the SEEyD Theatre Company came up with a turkey – the laws of theatrical success being what they are – you are going to be disappointed even if the plotting of their latest offering Turbine gets a bit confusing at times. [more]

HAMLET, PRINCE OF DENMARK at Brooklyn Community Centre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 4 Dec 2006
Common Kiwi touch
The play is taken at a fair clip, which means as usual that at times sense and poetry are lost, but the compensations are gratifying: the exciting story is told to us by the actors only centimeters away ... [more]
