TOUCH. PAUSE. ENGAGE - UNITEC DANCE SHOWCASE 2011 at Raye Freedman ARTS CENTRE, Gillies Avenue (Cnr Silver Road) Epsom
reviewed by Jenny Stevenson 2 Dec 2011
Dancers shown off to advantage
Not a single scrum to be seen in this high energy show – but the rugby referee’s mantra of touch... pause... engage... could easily parallel a choreographer’s instructions to a group of dancers, and has a pleasing synergy in this context, [more]

Rich pleasures and poignancies
’Tis meet we meet for Meat at Bookfeast: a specialist shop in Jackson Street, Petone. With a demonstration kitchen at one end, it offers an ideal intimate setting for this development season of Geraldine Brophy’s latest tasty theatrical treat, served up with seductive love by K C Kelly. [more]

THE MERIDIAN SEASON OF THE SLEEPING BEAUTY at Civic Theatre
reviewed by Rosemary Martin 1 Dec 2011
Truly first rate pure escapism
This version of The Sleeping Beauty suits the company down to a tee. The paring back and careful editing by choreographer Greg Horsman; the exquisite designs; a live orchestra and a splendid company of dancers has resulted in a production that is truly first-rate. If you are after an evening of pure escapism to a fantasy world where good triumphs over evil and love conquers all, then you must go and watch this delightful production. The season at The Civic runs until Sunday 4th December. [more]

NINE at Whitireia Performance Centre, 25-27 Vivian Street
reviewed by Greer Robertson 28 Nov 2011
Effervescence and energy lift 8½ to Nine
Nine is a musical theatre piece first taken from a book, which then became a film, which then went on to be a five time Tony Award-winning Broadway production. Like a game of charades opening, it spans the lot. The story is based on Federici Fellini semi-autobiographical film 8½. [more]

PARTY WITH THE AUNTIES at Miramar Rangers AFC Clubrooms
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 28 Nov 2011
A marvellous party with the aunties
Never was there a more accurate title than Party with the Aunties. Balloons, paper streamers and fairy lights decorate the Miramar Rangers Clubrooms; the bar is open; the seating and the tables are arranged higgledy-piggledy; a couple of the performers are casually singing as the guests (that’s the audience) wander in ... STAB-BATS 2011
TINDERBOX at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 28 Nov 2011
A powerful production: don’t miss it
Hans Christian Andersen’s story has been given an epic sweep – a dark Odyssey - with the central figure, a morally troubled soldier ... who is a deserter from a 1000-year war and who, when he rescues the tinderbox from an underground cave for a scrawny old man, is told that the tinderbox will assist him in becoming the man “you want to be.” [more]

TANIWHATHAMES at Theatre Downstairs, The Oval House, 52-54 Kennington Oval
reviewed by James Hadley 27 Nov 2011
Allegorical blend of theatrical ideas
Shaky Isles Theatre’s new devised show, Taniwha Thames, directed by Stella Duffy at London’s Oval House Theatre, seems inspired by the conflicting yearnings that most Kiwis feel at some stage of their life: to travel and explore the world when in Aotearoa / to return home when they’re based a whole world away in London – but after how long, and for what reasons?
