FOUR FLAT WHITES IN ITALY at Circa One
reviewed by Michael Wray 22 Aug 2009
Packs emotional luggage in with the comedy
Four Flat Whites pits together two couples, who couldn’t differ in many more ways. In one corner we have intellectual, Labour-voting, budget-conscious, ex-university librarians with sensible clothes and sandals - Adrian and Alison. In the opposing corner sit plain-speaking, wealthy, National-voting, retired plumber Harry and his sensual wife Judy. [more]

Kiwi quartet on tour in Italy with all the cultural baggage
Early in the first act of Roger Hall's new play – as an irritable foursome of mismatched travellers are dragging their suitcases through Venice in search of the eternally elusive pensione – Stuart Devenie turns to the audience and announces: "Well you know what's going to happen don't you?" [more]

FOUR FLAT WHITES IN ITALY at Circa One (return season)

Winning game plan: rugby, coffee and travel
Two flat whites in Wellington tottered along to the opening night of this return season. Reprised to take advantage, I assume, of the Rugby World Cup crowd being drawn in by its famous playwright and strong ties to the 2007 Cup in France. [more]

Funny and insightful with tragic underpinnings
Two couples, one sparrowy, intellectual, sparse in joy and money, the other wealthy, peacock-bold and brash with ignorance, decide to travel to Italy together. Politics, education, clothing, money, and sex all serve to illustrate the divide between the couples. [more]

Hit-and-miss results
Four fledgling comics, two Kiwi, two British, share an hour in a random order as determined by the onstage spinning selector wheel. [more]

Taking theatre out of the theatre
John Humphries, Will Gaisford and Amy Molloy. Names to watch out for if you are interested in the development of innovative theatre in Auckland. They are the driving force behind a young energised entity called In the Shape of A Square. Graduates of Unitec, not only are they creating their own opportunities; they are focussing on fresh ideas, fresh performance spaces, fresh actors, and a fresh approach. [more]

FOUR WOMEN at Centrepoint

A lovely, heart-warming show
Pasifika girls!! You want to, sure, you really can be a Big Brown Barbie (or not so big), a beauty princess, and whatever else you choose to be! That’s the key message of this feisty show ... [more]

Compelling and challenging
... More extraordinary is the proposition that they are replicating and revealing aspects of themselves they would never have known, let alone exposed, before this fateful weekend. That they are publicly ‘confessing’ in the greater interests of our understanding of ourselves and each other helps to allay any fears that long term damage has been done to their psyches ... [more]

Unsettling experiment
During 1971 a rather controversially experiment was undertaken by a Psychology Professor in America to explore human behaviour in a prison situation. It became known as the Stamford Experiment with similarities in later years to the Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse scandal. [more]

Sci Fi take on illusion, creation, responsibility and what it is to be human
The scene is intriguingly set (Grae Burton is the playwright and set designer). Opaque screens drop from ceiling to floor creating a feeling of sterility and containment. The screens play back images, and from the start we see the inflated projection of Mark’s head (Matt Baker). [more]
