Corner 4am & Cuba is a memorial to a 14 year-old boy, Jeff Whittington, who was murdered in Inverlochy Place, near Aro St in 1999. The director of this hour-long piece of collaborative theatre has said Jeff’s brutal murder just needs to be remembered. [more]

The milkman still delivers
A standing ovation greeted Topol at the end of the marathon musical of which he has been the star since 1967. The applause wasn’t for endurance but for a beautifully structured performance that is fresh and strong and is supported by his fine speaking voice and his sly comedy as Tevye chats to God, and his powerful singing. The Vanya plays the fool
What is so enjoyable about Susan Wilson’s ebullient production of this play, often suffused in melancholia, is that the comedy is played to the hilt just as she did with her 2005 production of The Cherry Orchard. [more]

A stimulating mix
With A Bright Room Called Day, Theatre Militia, in their best production so far by a long way, have thrown a post-Brechtian Molotov cocktail of a play into the current theatrical scene and it makes plays about old soldiers and an ageing seductress seem trivial. [more]

Surprising reversals and revelations
With Stand Up Love, Gavin McGibbon’s finely written second play, we are into the hermetically sealed world of intimate relationships and what it means to be in love. Freddy is a stand up comedian whose source of comedy is his personal life with his partner, Ana, who earns a regular wage and is able to keep her work (it’s never clear what) at work. [more]

Stimulating Othello with a Kiwi setting
Jim Moriarty, following the late Don Selwyn and George Henare, is the third Maori actor to play Othello at Downstage since the theatre was founded in 1964, but he is the first to play the role in a production that sets the play in New Zealand during the land wars. [more]

Capturing the essence of a Kiwi classic
Mervyn Thompson in his solo autobiographical play Passing Through paid tribute to Bruce Mason and The End of the Golden Weather by describing Mason as sculpting in his mind “a fort of magic, a shield of images, shored up against the vanishings of time.” He also described Golden Weather as “larger-than-life and truer.” [more]

BLACKBIRD at Circa Two

Unmissable, challenging and probably unforgettable
“Truth is rarely pure, and never simple,” said Lady Bracknell. Though David Harrower’s searing and emotionally riveting drama Blackbird is as far from Wildean comedy as you can imagine, it bears out the truth of her statement in an area of life that is highly complex and clouded by fear, hatred and disgust.
