ANGELS IN AMERICA PART I: MILLENNIUM APPROACHES at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 1 Oct 2007
Modern masterpiece played with panache
My theatregoing cup runneth over: enthralling new play at Bats one night, hilarious comedy at Soundings the next, and then part one of a modern American masterpiece performed with a brilliance and panache that bode extremely well for our theatre’s future. [more]

HOME LAND at Circa One
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 15 Oct 2007
A golden evening of theatre
Home Land is a beautiful play and in Jane Waddell’s loving and scrupulously detailed production it is a profoundly moving one. She has assembled a true ensemble cast that is so integrated with the characters that it matches the cast of Circa’s Joyful and Triumphant in creating an indelible portrait of Pakeha New Zealand life and the dramatic realization of the meaning of the two words in the title: home and land. I’M NOT RAPPAPORT at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 18 Oct 2007
Comic flair lights up stage
Like old wines and cheeses, Ray Henwood and George Henare get better as they get older especially now that they are closer in age to the curmudgeonly octogenarian odd couple that they play in I’m not Rappaport than they were when they first played the roles 20 years ago at Downstage. [more]

ARCADIA at Te Whaea National Dance and Drama Centre, 11 Hutchison Rd, Newtown

Up for challenge of comedy, complexity and Wildean wit
One group of this year’s graduating acting students of Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School has already presented Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, a modern American classic merging past and present whilst dealing with complex social, sexual, and political themes. [more]

SETTLING at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 31 Oct 2007
Damn good theatre
Two years in the making, numerous meetings, a five-week workshop and eight weeks of rehearsals have produced a rambling, highly entertaining, often very funny play called Settling, which belongs to the Robert Altman school of plotting, and it’s all about living in Wellington. [more]

URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 19 Nov 2007
Odd but endearingly bizarre
... The plot is, not surprisingly, simple: there is a drastic shortage of water in a city that might be New York and private toilets are prohibited. “Public amenities” that everyone has to use are controlled by a greedy and corrupt corporation run by Cladwell. He keeps raising the prices ... [more]

ROGER HALL’S JACK AND THE BEANSTALK: THE PANTOMIME at Circa One
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 22 Nov 2007
wacky humour carries the day
Roger Hall’s Jack and the Beanstalk is a laugh-a-minute show that had an elderly audience with a sprinkling of vociferous youngsters at the performance I attended thoroughly enjoying themselves as they all entered into the madcap spirit of a traditional pantomime. [more]

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE at Circa Two
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 26 Nov 2007
Brave and daring but a bit loud for a small theatre
The youthful Almost A Bird Theatre Collective’s fifth production is a very loud version of A Streetcar Named Desire for so small a theatre as Circa 2. It is, however, as daring as its last year’s production of The Glass Menagerie. [more]

REVENGE OF THE AMAZONS at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 3 Dec 2007
Explodes with energy, laughs and disco
When Puck (Tanea Heke) appears dressed in a culotte dress, roller skates, an afro hairdo and oozing Motown glamour while lost in another world through her headphones, and Cobweb (Salesi Le’ota) is tightly wrapped in Lurex hot pants and sucking a lollipop, and the rude mechanicals are fanatical feminists who call themselves The Fallopian Thespians and the entire cast in the finale start disco dancing with Travolta-like assurance then you know, like Bottom, that you have had “a most rare vision.” [more]

GODZONE at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 6 Dec 2007
Gentle spoof on Kiwi men
The silly season just got a whole lot sillier with the arrival of three Kiwi blokes in shorts, singlets, and gumboots on stage at Bats where, to quote the publicity, it’s open slather on the doodackie huru we call home. [more]
