PARTY WITH THE AUNTIES at Miramar Rangers AFC Clubrooms
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 28 Nov 2011
A marvellous party with the aunties
Never was there a more accurate title than Party with the Aunties. Balloons, paper streamers and fairy lights decorate the Miramar Rangers Clubrooms; the bar is open; the seating and the tables are arranged higgledy-piggledy; a couple of the performers are casually singing as the guests (that’s the audience) wander in ... TINDERBOX at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 28 Nov 2011
A powerful production: don’t miss it
Hans Christian Andersen’s story has been given an epic sweep – a dark Odyssey - with the central figure, a morally troubled soldier ... who is a deserter from a 1000-year war and who, when he rescues the tinderbox from an underground cave for a scrawny old man, is told that the tinderbox will assist him in becoming the man “you want to be.” [more]

TANIWHATHAMES at Theatre Downstairs, The Oval House, 52-54 Kennington Oval

Allegorical blend of theatrical ideas
Shaky Isles Theatre’s new devised show, Taniwha Thames, directed by Stella Duffy at London’s Oval House Theatre, seems inspired by the conflicting yearnings that most Kiwis feel at some stage of their life: to travel and explore the world when in Aotearoa / to return home when they’re based a whole world away in London – but after how long, and for what reasons? TINDERBOX at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 26 Nov 2011
Wondrously crafted production of great intelligence, wisdom and creative inquisitiveness
Billed as “a development season for a much larger work,” The Playground Collective’s Tinderbox offers a theatrically ingenious and dramatically compelling two-hour enquiry into the expectations and experiences of young adults as they confront the realities of life in the wake of childhoods conditioned by fairytales. ROGER HALL’S ALADDIN: THE PANTOMIME at Circa One
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 25 Nov 2011
Impressive magic among the gags
Not much has changed in Roger Hall’s Aladdin since it first appeared at Circa in 2006, though its geography has got even more confusing than I remember. [more]

KINGDOM OF CARDS (TASHER DESH) at TAPAC Theatre, Western Springs
reviewed by Aidan-B. Howard 25 Nov 2011
A play to make you smile
I was certainly looking forward to this. The Prayas Theatre Company has been around for six years now and is New Zealand’s leading Indian drama company; one which attempts to break out from, in its own words, “stereotypical compartmentalisation – mystic spirituality, exotic curries and Bollywood glamour.” [more]

RITA AND DOUGLAS at Concert Chamber - Town Hall, THE EDGE
reviewed by Paul Simei-Barton 24 Nov 2011
Artist’s liaisons make for evocative viewing
It is difficult to imagine a better way to appreciate the art of Rita Angus and Douglas Lilburn than this celebratory tribute in which a sharp dramatisation of their quarrelsome relationship is counterpoised with Michael Houstoun's exquisite renditions of Lilburn's piano works while a luminous display of Angus' paintings appears as an enormous projection. PARTY WITH THE AUNTIES at Miramar Rangers AFC Clubrooms
reviewed by John Smythe 24 Nov 2011
Relaxed party atmosphere belies their creative expertise
A sausage-sizzle outside the Miramar Rangers Football Clubrooms welcomes us. Upstairs the bar is festooned with party decorations, and as we buy our drinks and find a seat the cast is casually strumming guitars and singing songs to establish the party atmosphere … [more]

RITA AND DOUGLAS at Concert Chamber - Town Hall, THE EDGE
reviewed by Aidan-B. Howard 23 Nov 2011
Remarkably deep and revealing
The famous artist Rita Angus (for a short time known also as Rita Cook and Rita McKenzie but actually born as Henrietta) and composer Douglas Lilburn (to some known as Gordon) for decades from the 1940s to 1960s had a relationship which was part friendship, part affair. It had profound effects on the lives and creativity of both of them. [more]
