Define the parameters more sharply? In the past these exercises were based on, grew out of, were inspired by the biography of someone the actor admired, loved or just found intriguing whether he or she was famous or completely unknown. This year, under the guidance of Jade Eriksen, the 22 students, the largest number in the school’s history, have been given a wider, much vaguer brief: how we as New Zealanders express our identity through storytelling. Many will significantly develop … The Toi Whakaari Go Solo season comprises 20-minute solos made and performed individually by the school’s 22 third-year students. These are divided into 6 groupings of 3 or 4 solos apiece, all of which I am pleased to say were, without exception, thoroughly engaging and enjoyable to watch. [more] |

Groups C, D, E: diversity with flair and confidence ... Although these are grouped into sets of four, to see the full programme means watching around seven hours of performance. Last weekend I sat through four and a half of those seven hours (groups C, D, and E), and am now faced with the challenge of distilling the experience, without diluting the flavours that this smorgasbord contains. Parading performance tricks These pieces become the performers’ calling cards so there is a propensity for pieces clearly designed around all the tricks the performer has up their sleeve. This often comes at the expense of focus and story. [more] |

GROUPS B & C: Realities Beyond & No-one stands alone A particular strength that is emerging from many of this year’s solos is their physicality: the way posture, angularities and other elements of visual language conveyed through the body are used to define and express characters, moods, states of being and other more abstract qualities. Group D: Gatherings Group D: Gatherings Of the 16 graduands presenting solo shows – mostly involving multiple scenes, locations and/or time jumps – very few have maintained the same character throughout. A couple have switched between two characters and all the rest, in various ways, have played multiple characters. This is true of all three who comprise Group D. [more] |

The collective individuality of grouped solo shows Twenty twenty-minute shows in one day… yes it is a marathon. Especially on those SEEyD space seats. Anyway, I’m not going to bother with an introduction proper, because the following couple of thousand words is probably enough!
