ONE MAN at Opera House
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 16 Oct 2008
Bovver boy of theatre has audience in his grip
Even though he’s in his early seventies, Steven Berkoff is still the bovver boy of English theatre: he’s a powerful performer, broad, and loud, but he’s an actor whose style is so compellingly out-of-tune with the refined naturalism we see most of the time on our screens and stages that he is a thrilling presence, particularly on stage. THE OUTING at The Front Room
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 20 Oct 2008
Corn-fed coterie
The Outing is a musical show or, as the programme has it, ‘an original musical tour de force’ about a group of gay and lesbian people travelling on a bus (shades of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) from Newtown to Civic Square for a dance party. [more]

APOLLO 13: MISSION CONTROL at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 25 Oct 2008
What a marvel
In a lifetime of theatergoing in this city I have never seen anything quite like Apollo 13: Mission Control. It is a truly amazing production. [more]

TOI WHAKAARI_NEW ZEALAND DRAMA SCHOOL GRADUATION SEASON 2008 at Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School & Circa 2
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 3 Nov 2008
All the drama of exams
University students simply write exams; the poor old Drama School student has to put on plays for public scrutiny during a month-long graduation season. Last month four productions of extremely challenging plays opened, with The Pillowman still running at Circa 2 until November 8. [AoTERRORoa – see below – plays until 6 November.] [more]

THE LITTLE DOG LAUGHED at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 10 Nov 2008
Slick Dog takes dig at Hollywood
The Little Dog Laughed is a slick comedy of manners poking fun at that the mores and hypocrisy of that tired old target: Hollywood. Tinsel Town is personified in the central character of Diane, an acerbic, amoral, obsessively driven, Machiavellian agent who schemes and plots her way to becoming a movie power-broker. [more]

ROGER HALL’S RED RIDING HOOD at Circa One
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 17 Nov 2008
Frantic frolic with a happy ending
Roger Hall’s helter skelter Red Riding Hood begins with Julian Wilson’s gravelly voiced Grandma Hood cajoling the audience into chanting rather unnecessarily ‘We want a panto!’ and it was, not surprisingly, made clear, particularly from a vociferous and well lubricated back row, that was exactly what we had come for. CYNTHIA'S CHRISTMAS AT CIRCA at Circa Two
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 24 Nov 2008
Cynthia’s back, polished and so up-to-date
Miss Cynthia Fortitude, the founding member of The Venezuelan United Living Virgins Association (NZ branch), is back with a vengeance starring in not just one show but two: The Legend Returns and A Vote for Cynthia, which are performed on different nights in the intimacy of Circa 2. [more]

CHRISTMAS INDOORS at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 5 Dec 2008
You'll laugh, you'll cry
Apart from The Sound of Music are there any plays depicting a happy family? From the Ancient Greeks right up to the 2008 Bruce Mason Playwriting Award winner Paul Rothwell, whose latest darkish comedy, Christmas Indoors, opened on Thursday at Bats, I can't think of one. [more]

BLINKERS AND SPURS at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 5 Dec 2008
Great madness in two takes
Blinkers and Spurs are two-hander one-acters with horses, quirky human beings, and a theme in common. [more]

THE LOOK OF LOVE – EVOCATIVE/PROVOCATIVE at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 10 Dec 2008
Smooth as silk, full of emotion
There’s no need to travel to New York for an evening of smooth, sophisticated cabaret performed by a top-liner in her prime. It’s all right here in Wellington even though we may not be sipping cocktails at tables looking out on to the Manhattan skyline. [more]
