What are you passionate about? What are your questions about creating theatre? What kinds of stories and storytelling do you want to see on stage? Director Sophie Roberts’ programme note reveals it was such questions that provoked the devising process for this year’s 18 Go Solo pieces from the Third Year Acting Students of Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School. Dualities, be they warring factions or contrapuntal value systems, characterise this grouping. I sense these four pieces – and much of the whole season – could be driven by a deep-felt ‘where to from here?’ concern. Emerging from tertiary education throws an especially strong light on the ‘who am I and what do I stand for?’ question, after all. [more]

The semi-coherent ranter who bookend’s this solo is someone we have all seen in the street. Now we have some insight into where he might have come from. A haunting ‘there but for the grace of whatever go I’ piece. Special. [more]

I scribbled “the loneliness of the long distance science nerd” while watching this. That about sums it up. Strong on pathos. [more]

Class all the way plus cake
Which is not to say that Gobsmacked: Showbiz and Dating is all shallow virtuosity because it’s not. Aitken, in particular, scales the heights and plumbs the emotional depths in rather spectacular fashion, and to such an extent that, in one of those unique stunned silences we all love so much, Burgess whispered ‘you didn’t think we’d go there, did you?’ – and we hadn’t. Musical production looks at gay man/ single woman bond
As part of Auckland's expanded Pride Festival, an enterprising Australian-Kiwi partnership offers a sweetly flavoured piece of musical theatre focusing on the emotional symbiosis that often develops between gay men and single straight women. [more]

Talent in spades; could use a director
Gobsmacked – Showbiz and Dating is a whirlwind musical extravaganza brought to us by James Burgess and Nikki Aitken. Meow is an excellent venue for the cabaret styled show which you should definitely calendar as a must-do if you are a fan of either comedy or musical theatre. [more]

GOBSMACKED: SHOWBIZ AND DATING at Isis Lounge, 68 Princess St

Polished and utterly hilarious
Gobsmacked is a fast paced torrent of anecdotes, musical clips, 80s songs and raunchy quips. The brazen stereotypes of the characters and the situations they find themselves in are flaunted and revelled in. [more]

Short on conceptual evolution
I can see the attraction in the concept: let’s examine the cave dwelling behaviour of our ancestors and hold this up against the antics of modern ‘man’ specifically as they are played out in the board room; a favourite Petri dish for examining the farcical worst of modern times. And all in all, it is often entertaining, occasionally brave and some of the dialogue very witty. [more]
