The Body Festival 2011
REVOLVE FROM DUSK TO DAWN at Geo Dome
reviewed by Kate Sullivan 5 Oct 2011
A strangely beautiful aesthetic generated from sleep science
As the dancer crosses the audience/performer threshold, a mundane moment is created, and this creates one of my favorite moments in the performance. The audience sitting across from me look as if they are part of the performance, as if they are all passengers on a subway [more]

Basement Fest. 2011
LOVE AFTER DARK at The Basement Studio, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Nik Smythe 5 Oct 2011
Radically different outcomes from identical beginnings
The algebraic breakdown reveals fifteen actors playing 3 one-act plays with five characters in each, four of whom have the same name in all three. Each one opens with an identical script, albeit played in radically differing ways ... [more]

DESPERATE ANTICS at Meteor Theatre
reviewed by Gail Pittaway 4 Oct 2011
Satirical humour in ‘peach’ of a play
Desperate Antics is a highly entertaining satirical piece, attributed to NZ writer and actor Kevin Keys, but in fact owing a great deal of credit to the Christian creed which he parodies relentlessly – both in text and ritual. [more]

Hamilton Fringe 2011
ATONAL HEART : FOUR MONOLOGUES at Meteor Theatre
reviewed by Gail Pittaway 3 Oct 2011
Strong writing and directing produce wonderful performances in contrasting styles
This intriguingly titled show consists of Four Monologues. James Cain and Michael Switzer write and direct two each; Michael Burrow and Henry Ashby each perform a monologue by each of the writer/directors. [more]

YOURS TRULY at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Paul Simei-Barton (NZ Herald) 3 Oct 2011
Victorian contradictions evoked with skilful stylistic shifts
Playwright Albert Belz has earned considerable acclaim for his treatment of Maori subjects but his re-telling of the Jack the Ripper story seems to be making a statement about the perils of pigeon-holing writers according to their ethnicity. [more]

The Body Festival 2011
2011 - SOUTHERN LIGHTS DANCE COMPANY at Geo Dome
reviewed by Paul Young 2 Oct 2011
Sources in culture, science, spirituality
The dancers exhibit a connection, a deliberate relativity, sometimes apparently triggering each other. They watch each other, I sense their investment but there is nothing at stake, they are waiting to make a decision but there is no anticipation. This is precision. I have been involved in abstract work before, but how this quality of easeful synchronicity is achieved, I don’t know. [more]

NEW ZEALAND BODY ART AWARDS SHOW 2011 at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Raewyn Whyte 2 Oct 2011
Spectacular body art entertains well
The "art" in the NZ Body Art Awards is an extraordinary mix of craft and design, involving makeup, body paint, embedded and attached objects, masks and body pieces, prosthetics and body extensions, all applied to a living human body... The living canvas which is the outcome of this work is seldom available for public display, other than on one special occasion -- as the culmination of the annual body art awards where finalists take to the catwalk as the entertainers in a gala showcase. TEMPO Dance Festival 2011
Y CHROMOSOME at Q, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Roxanne de Bruyn 2 Oct 2011
All male, energetic, fast paced production
The showcase is ultimately a celebration of male dancers, and effectively demonstrates their strengths and attributes - their physical prowess, their skill, technique and performance ability, and the very different moods and expressions they bring to their performances. [more]
