MINGE at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 7 Dec 2010
Frankness with comedy
Minge is a revue made up of what are essentially monologues but they are performed with eight actors and two musicians on stage all the time. [more]

MRS MERRY’S CHRISTMAS CONCERT at THE BOX, Buick St, Petone
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 7 Dec 2010
Children, adults and the big wide world
An unusual event occurred on Friday night in Petone: a small 60-seat theatre opened its doors for the first time. Actually in these austere days it’s a miracle that anyone would open a new theatre and it is to Geraldine Brophy and Ross Joblin’s great credit that The Box is now under way ... [more]

NO TASTE FOREVER! at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 17 Jan 2011
Tragic plots end up in a Marx Brothers-like finale
Always expect the unexpected in a Paul Rothwell play. His latest looks at first as if it is going to be a revue even though it starts with the accidental death of a young girl, whose ghost later appears every now and then in search of the ice-cream she was about to eat when disaster struck. [more]

THE MUSIC OF ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER at St James Theatre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 12 May 2011
The unexpected triumph of the look
The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber is a silky, well-oiled musical revue and is a must for any Lloyd Webber fan. Thirty three songs in all and sung by a cast of eight, all of whom have the necessary voices and the pop opera romanticism and flamboyance to carry them off successfully without the support of magnificent settings and glamorous costumes. AWHI TAPU at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 18 Jul 2011
Truly remarkable revival
When Awhi Tapu was first presented at Circa 2 eight years ago it was given a simple production with a symbolic misty setting representing both the thriving but troubled past and the bleak present of the dying small mill town, Awhi Tapu (pop. 200), in the Ureweras. [more]

SOAP THE SHOW at St James Theatre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 30 Jul 2011
Soap, with a dash of opera, revels in making a splash
Once you’ve seen Soap you might be forgiven for thinking that this brilliant hybrid of circus, theatre and vaudeville was an expensive ad for a club not a stone’s throw from the St James. [more]

WHEN THE RAIN STOPS FALLING at Circa One
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post online) 2 Aug 2011
Splendid, inspiring, engrossing
Susan Wilson seems to be able to pull out all the stops when it comes to casting and staging large scale, engrossing family dramas such as Joyful and Triumphant, Angels in America and August: Osage County. Along with her marvellous ensemble cast she has triumphed yet again with the dark, layered, but always fascinating and moving When the Rain Stops Falling. [more]

EIGHT at Circa Two
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 9 Aug 2011
Eight becomes six as choice examined
Eight is the play you can vote for the characters you would like to see. You can vote on-line or you can vote as you enter the theatre. The voting form provides the briefest of descriptions of them and which New Zealand fashion house has dressed them. You will get to meet six of them. [more]

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENTS #2 at BATS
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 5 Sep 2011
Borax poked effectively
It’s election year and time to revive (or should that be disinter?) the late-night satirical revue. James Nokise and Rachel Henry have come up with a 40 minute revue that contains quick-fire sketches that were once the staple diet of TV comedy. [more]

SEX DRIVE at Circa One
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 17 Oct 2011
Sex Drive cruises in fourth gear but finally hits turbo
The funniest scene in Sex Drive is the finale when this rambling and not exactly subtle comedy suddenly explodes like a fizzing bottle of champagne. At times it seemed that the traditional cheeky sit-com jokes and situations and its one or two flaccid moments were unlikely to provide a satisfactory climax. The first night audience was ecstatic.
