HAMLET, PRINCE OF DENMARK at Brooklyn Community Centre
reviewed by Laurie Atkinson (The Dominion Post) 4 Dec 2006
Common Kiwi touch
The play is taken at a fair clip, which means as usual that at times sense and poetry are lost, but the compensations are gratifying: the exciting story is told to us by the actors only centimeters away ... [more]

HAMLET, PRINCE OF DENMARK at St. Peters Church Hall, Paekakariki
reviewed by Ralph McAllister 4 Dec 2006
Madness or method?
The Bacchanals are not frightened to challenge themselves. Take a rundown village hall, perform one of the greatest plays in the English language, in a terrifyingly small space with no theatre lights, few sound effects and the most basic of costumes and props ... [more]

Terrific Shakespearean ensemble
The Bacchanals are indeed like the travelling players who come to Elsinor (though far better actors it must be said), as they take this free production of Hamlet out and about Wellington. Don’t let the fact it’s free fool you into thinking its not of a professional standard – it most certainly is, indeed, it’s one of the most engaging productions seen in the Capital this year. [more]

HAMLET, PRINCE OF DENMARK at Muritai School Hall, Eastbourne
reviewed by John Marwick 7 Dec 2006
Much to commend and some buts
There was much to praise and enjoy in the production on the floor of the Muritai School Hall at Eastbourne on Thursday. As always the characteristic energy and pace was there and it carried a good-sized audience through three hours of gripping performance ... [more]

HANDY MAN at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 13 May 2008
Excellent chemistry
Once more, on the smell of a rag that can no longer afford to be oily, a team of committed professionals has come together to do the most important work in New Zealand theatre: produce the world premiere of a new work by a very promising local playwright. Admirably. [more]

HANDY MAN at BATS

A truly unwelcome tradesman
Handy Man, Gavin McGibbon’s latest short play is a tense psychological thriller set in a bach by a lonely beach where an about-to-be divorced couple has come to sort out their possessions. The tensions between Richard and Claire crackle from the moment they enter, and then Richard discovers the toilet is leaking. [more]

A powder keg
Taut is the word for Gavin McGibbon’s latest play – they really don’t get much tauter than this, 60 minutes of unsettling theatre where you’re trapped along with Richard (Jade Daniels) and Claire (Kate Prior) by their handyman turned home invader (Jason Ward Kennedy). [more]

HANNAH GADSBY: KISS ME QUICK I'M FULL OF JUBES at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Venus Stephens 13 May 2009
Reminiscent of a sulky teenage girl
Comedians can reveal so much of their personal lives in an hour and Hannah Gadsby has no shortage of material fuelled by her life so far. We are 'visited' by her motherthroughout the night, not physically you understand; but through the retelling of 'endearing moments' and language that only Mothers use. [more]

HANNAH GADSBY: THE CLIFF YOUNG SHUFFLE at The Elliot Stables, 39 Elliot St, City
reviewed by Karyn Cushen 25 Apr 2010
A light-hearted look at the human condition
This particular show uses the feats of Cliff Young, a geriatric Australian potato farmer that won an ultra marathon in the eighties and went on to marry a twenty year old, to frame her insane and uncharacteristic quest to cross England by foot. [more]

HANSEL & GRETEL at Aurora Centre, cnr Greers Rd and Memorial Ave, Burnside
reviewed by Lindsay Clark 20 Jul 2011
A charming and slightly offbeat entertainment
The audience for Dan Bain’s version of the beloved fairytale is relatively quiet. This is because they are deeply absorbed and concentrating in a way not required by the noisy cartoonish remakes which often pass for children’s theatre. The Bain tale is mimed as well as original in its adaptations and additions ... [more]
