HANUSSEN – THE PALACE OF BURLESQUE at Theatre Royal
reviewed by Gail Tresidder 13 Feb 2012
An unforgettable night of theatre
This production sparkles and fizzes. Neatly held together by the fascinating true story of showman extraordinaire, Erik Jan Hanussen, the brilliant ensemble acting, skilful circus acts and singing and dancing of the finest quality, make a performance unlike anything I have ever seen. [more]

Fresh and intoxicating charmer
Nine personality types from a psychological map called the Enneagram model formed the basis for the development of the work. The Perfectionist, the Giver, the Performer, the Tragic Romantic, the Observer, the Devil's Advocate, the Optimist, the Boss and the Mediator seek the notion of happiness, with varying degrees of success, through a dance vocabulary that blends several elements. When fun and games turn serious
This curious show, defying easy categorisation, is not at all predictable from its advance publicity. Nine performers, young and fast, set a game-like mood seemingly aimed at a youth audience. But don’t be fooled – this is a serious theatre piece, from Australia, about the contemporary lives of young people, the implications of which are of course for all of us. [more]

HAPPY COUPLING at Centrepoint
reviewed by John Ross (The Dominion Post) 21 Aug 2007
Warmly recommended
Having a stag party on one floor of a hotel and the corresponding hen party on the floor below looks bound to provide scope for even more than the usual degrees of horrendous embarrassment. And so it proves, in this new farcical comedy, with increasing invasions of each others’ segregated turf. [more]

Arty farce
Writer Ross Gumbley has followed Tom Stoppard down the dramatic path of The Farce of Ideas. True to form it’s about people coming through doors at the wrong time or just in time. Upstairs is the stag party of Digby, downstairs is the hen party of his bride-to-be Mandy... [more]

HAPPY DAYS at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge

Pragmatic optimism v recalcitrance
Beautifully cast and making the best use of her throatily feminine voice, Robyn Malcolm’s Winnie is a bubbly old dear, whose apparently numerous years far outstrip her fresh, comparatively vibrant appearance. She wakes to a jarring school-bell type alarm, says her prayers and attends to her ablutions, all the while babbling observational platitudes as ... [more]

Superb performances fire up Beckett work
A seldom-produced work by one of the 20th century’s most influential writers affords an opportunity to experience the genius of Samuel Beckett in its most minimal form. [more]

HAPPY HOME ROAD at James Hay Theatre

Where is the magic of risk and spectacle?
The safety curtain lifts on a copse of tall white trees with spindly stubby limbs. On a plinth, a goldfish circles in a bowl. A woman in scarlet descends from the sky. Leaves fall likewise. She exits slowly, trailing an endless red train. And all the while, jangling strings and melodious gongs meander an ever-descending scale… [more]

HAPPY HOUR FOR MISERABLE CHILDREN at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge

Clown logic
As the audience is seated we have a chance to peruse Rachel Walker’s sumptuously decrepit set and observe the harlequin entity of the sole musician ... as he fiddles about in accompaniment to the house music. The atmosphere creates an uneasy but positive kind of anticipation of what is to come. [more]

HARLEQUIN SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 2 Oct 2009
Hilarious, historic, extraordinary …
Centre stage of the Aotea Centre’s ASB Theatre stands a tall curtain rail, with a smaller raised stage in front upon which the story is acted out. Around the stage are chairs and stools and one or two instruments, and down stage a row of candle footlights. The ancient prompter (Stefano Guizzi) painstakingly lights them one by one whilst greeting us with a friendly ‘kia-ora’, thereby initiating the many laughs to follow. [more]
