13 at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Poppy Haynes 8 Nov 2012
Strong energy between actors in commendable production of ambitious play
Across a discontented city, Londoners are all wracked by the same nightmare. Students protest fees hikes, a resentful granny vandalises her bank, a precocious child appals her mother with atheism and aloofness, the Tory Prime Minister considers war with Iran. [more]

Challenge accepted
I got a sneak preview of 13 when I went to the shows at the upstairs Basement Studio the night before. A cacophony of shouts and screams impossible to ignore rose from the floorboards below. Whatever was happening downstairs, it sounded explosive. [more]

2 B OR NT 2 B? at Downstage Theatre Bar

2b or not 2b needs to be everywhere
In the past I have got very excited about writer/ director Sarah Delahunty’s challenging revisitings of ancient folk tales, in Superbeast (2006) and Eating The Wolf (2005 – review now appended to the Superbeast one on this site). Now she has found the seriously comic resonant links between six classically tragic characters and today’s angst-ridden teenagers. [more]

2 B OR NT 2 B? at Downstage Theatre Bar

An excellent idea, intelligently realised
2 b or nt 2 b? takes six characters from six classic plays and re-envisages them as 2008 teenagers, replete with cell phones, computers and plenty of angst. Writer and director Sarah Delahunty wrote the play for her senior drama class – obviously to extend their knowledge of classics, but also to help them connect with the feelings of characters without complexities of language or changing social mores getting in the way. Comic gem from a serious subject
Performed by six of Sarah Delahunty’s senior drama students, 2b or nt 2b? takes six famous characters from dramatic literature, including Hamlet, Hedda Gabler, and Antigone, and merges them with six troubled, alienated, confused, muddled modern teenagers with laptops and cell phones who all meet up on The Bridge to Nowhere (probably somewhere near Foxton) after linking up on www.whatsthepoint.com. 2 DIMENSIONAL LIFE OF HER at NZ Portrait Gallery, Shed 11, Queen's Wharf

Pretentiously obscure or a valid discussion-starter?
This work of audio-visual animation, puppetry and performance art is unusually abstract for a children’s festival show. [more]

Original and exciting esoteric work
Nothing is what it seems, a blackened wall is wiped clean to reveal a clay figure. It climbs out of the wall and onto an easel, the easel morphs into a box and the figure is trapped, a person scribbles on the easel until the figure and the box disappear into blackness. The artworks have minds of their own. [more]

A surreal out-of-mind experience
If you like your theatre straightforward, 2 Dimensional Life of Heris not for you. But if you have a healthy imagination and a childlike enthusiasm for new ideas, see Fleur Elise Noble's remarkable performance. [more]

Fun, involving, challenging
WOW! I have just been overwhelmed by a show/installation of such visual richness that I am not sure I will ever get to the bottom of it; that is if I know any more what is up or down, over or under, flat or 3D. [more]

Creepy, disjointed, and clever
The audience is led into a dark space filled with erratic black and white images, and the smell of paper. There is a sense of excitement – the set is untidy and rough around the edges. We aren't sure what to expect. [more]
