SLAVA'S SNOW SHOW at St James Theatre
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 10 Jul 2009
Innovative and original show melts away blues
Although Wellington is not prone to snow storms it is nevertheless somewhat ironic that in the middle of a harsh winter a show with snow as it’s central theme is in town to entertain and wipe away those winter blues. [more]

YOUNG AND HUNGRY 09 – WELLINGTON at BATS
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 13 Jul 2009
Dark, lyrical urban tale best of mixed bunch
This is the 15th year that Young and Hungry has been running at BATS – which for the first is also running concurrently in Auckland. The three plays, all new works from NZ writers, are as diverse as ever. [more]

CINDERELLA at 4 Moncrieff St., Mt. Victoria
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 16 Jul 2009
A clever, absorbing makeover
The traditional story of Cinderella is left fairly well intact by Rachel More in her well-scripted adaptation for Kidzstuff Theatre for Children’s current school holiday production, which has four actors playing multiple roles without losing the essence of the story. [more]

THE 39 STEPS at Circa One
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 20 Jul 2009
Witty winter warm-up
There must be something about a production when it receives three rounds of applause - including one for the opening voice over reminding patrons to turn off their cell phones - within 5 minutes of the show starting and there certainly is with Circa Theatre's The 39 Steps ... [more]

PIRATES VS NINJAS at BATS
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 5 Feb 2010
Action-packed show is not for the faint-hearted
Although this year’s Fringe Festival doesn’t officially start till next week, Bats Theatre has got in early by labelling its current productions as part of their Fringe programme. And if Anya Tate-Manning’s production of Pirates vs Ninja is any indication of what is in store then it bodes well for a great Festival, at BATS at least. [more]

SIR JOHN FALSTAFF AND THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR at Gladstone Vinyard
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 16 Feb 2010
Knight’s quest for wealth full of laughs
Written as pure entertainment with no heavy or hidden meaning or insights into the humour condition - “ a crazy sitcom”, as Lawrence calls it in his programme notes – the play lends itself admirably to Lawrence’s style of directing. [more]

THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE at Circa Two
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 8 Apr 2010
Highly entertaining
The Improvisors’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice at Circa Theatre is a lively interactive children’s show. Having spent many years creating improvised shows for adults, this is their first venture into children’s theatre, and a very successful one it is to. [more]

ROBIN HOOD AND THE LOST CROWN at Gryphon
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 8 Apr 2010
Humour, energy and animation
The legend of Robin Hood stealing from the rich to pay the poor has taken many forms over the years, providing many writers with lots of material for creating action packed stories. [more]

TE KAUPOI at BATS
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 12 Jun 2010
Mother Mere, full of depth
Advertised as a politically raunchy drama, the latest production to open at BATS – Te Kaupoi – is all that and more. The setting is New Zealand sometime in the future where civil unrest is rife and the country is on the verge of becoming a police state. [more]

WAITING FOR GODOT at St James Theatre
reviewed by Ewen Coleman (The Dominion Post) 1 Jul 2010
The wait for perfect theatre piece is over
Those who think Samuel Beckett's play Waiting For Godot is no more than two old men sitting under a tree waiting, which is then repeated in the second act, need to go and see the Theatre Royal's touring production from London, currently playing at the St James Theatre. [more]
