IDIOTS: BACK 2 SCHOOL at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 18 May 2011
Quality comedy
Sampson has a sharp eye and ear for what makes people tick and insightfully probes their pretentions, dreams and vulnerabilities to deliver the blueprint for unerringly good performances in this Wellington production of Idiots: Back 2 School, which premiered last year in Auckland ... [more]

IF YOU ONLY SEE ONE SHOW IN YOUR LIFE at Te Whaea National Dance and Drama Centre, 11 Hutchison Rd, Newtown
reviewed by Michael Gilchrist 8 Mar 2012
Promising theatre becomes gut-bustingly funny
If you only see one show in your life is an enquiry into the promises a theatrical event makes to its audience – including the big one, that it will “change your life” – and how willingly we conspire, as an audience, to make our wishes come true. [more]

IHIMAERA at Auckland Town Hall
reviewed by William Dart (New Zealand Herald) 5 Mar 2011
Fascinating and provocative look at a contentious icon
She saluted James K. Baxter in 2000 and Hone Tuwhare five years later; on Thursday, Charlotte Yates once again rounded up her colleagues to pay tribute to a rather more contentious literary icon, Witi Ihimaera. [more]

ILLUSION DANCETHEATRE at Devonport Methodist Church
reviewed by Felicity Molloy 11 Jun 2008
Raw beginnings but watch his space
Patrick Suenderhauf is a dancer of the highest credentials. We actually got to see him move briefly at the beginning of the show, and my heart cracked. How is it that Suenderhauf is not performing? His elegance and exquisiteness was really something to see. [more]

IMAGINING REALITY at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 19 Feb 2007
Witty and stylish imaginings
The first laugh comes from the set: a massive pair of y-fronts. It becomes a screen on which is projected a voyeur’s view (is that a tautology?) of a woman in the loo, whose slowly chalked graffiti says it all … A little girl running through long grass morphs into flamingos taking off from an African lake … [more]

IMMACULATE at Gryphon
reviewed by John Smythe 6 Jul 2012
A fertile imagination at play
Unexpected pregnancy can do strange things to a single woman, even more so when she hasn’t had sex for eleven months; not that she remembers, anyway. This is the premise of UK playwright Oliver Lansley’s whimsical play, happily relocated in NZ by director Melanie Camp, given the situation is universal and the script does not demand cultural specificity. Like a delicious layer cake
Comedy Intelligence Agency (CIA)’s Improsaurus strike gold once again in this extremely funny and entertaining show which also has the added attraction of taking the piss out of improvisers. [more]

IMPROV - THE ROCK OPERA at Circa Two
reviewed by John Smythe 7 May 2008
Virtually guaranteed entertainment. They rock
The indefatigable Improvisors are back in stunning form with Improv – The Rock Opera, following last year’s memorable Improv - The Musical. A blend of old hands and new blood exemplify the qualities of intelligent listening, positive responding, creative inspiration, adding value and team work as they pursue their quest to group-devise an instant Rock Opera with audience-offered elements as their inspiration. IMPROV - THE SECONDARY SCHOOL MUSICAL at Circa Two
reviewed by Lynn Freeman (Capital Times) 25 Feb 2009
Remarkable crafting
The Improvisers take the well traversed high school musical genre and turn it not only on its head but inside out and give it a good shake. This has more in common with the brilliant scathing Aussie comedy set in a high school, its name escapes me, but subversion was the name of the game as it is here. [more]

IMPROV ANGELS at BATS
reviewed by Patrick Davies 28 Apr 2008
A slow burn that really delivers
Yes Charlie is back! This time with four Improv Angels! Based upon the 70’s crime fighting TV series our titular team save New Zealand from a fate worse than the previous night’s. [more]
