Dunedin Fringe 2011
HULLAPOLLOI at Allen Hall Theatre
reviewed by Jonathan W. Marshall 20 Mar 2011
The ridiculousness of rules and desires
Although embodiment is a strong focus throughout, the bodies at work here come across as neither especially athletic, nor indeed particularly human. The lycra is worn over basic T-shirts and shorts, and the effect is a somewhat baggy, non-descript, often rather pear shaped physique. [more]

TOWER TUTUS ON TOUR 2011 at Town Hall
reviewed by Kasey Dewar 20 Mar 2011
Impressive performances
As a complete show I was impressed with both of the performances danced by the Royal New Zealand Ballet. I thought perhaps Pinocchio would completely outshine Verdi Variations, but I felt while they were quite different to each other they both had pieces that have stood out in my mind, as noted in my review. HEAR TO SEE at Opera House
reviewed by John Smythe 20 Mar 2011
Presentation tail wags storytelling dog
“Amazing visuals,” is the buzz in the foyer after the world premiere of Hear to See. And the music. And the sound. All stunning. The performers, seen and unseen, do a great job too. It’s the story, such as it is, that has people grumbling. [more]

HEAR TO SEE at Opera House

Amazing puppeteering in a story that could work better
The story follows Ollie as he tries to get back to being one with nature. Or actually he does not try to get back to nature, nature tries to get back to him. [more]

FRESH TALENT STANDS UP at The Church, 50 Dundas Street
reviewed by Patrick Davies 19 Mar 2011
A lack of atmosphere and punctuation
First show of the Fringe is always exciting and this is the first of a number of shows produced by AntiSocial Tap who have been providing comedy to Dunedin for over two years now. Armed with my glass o’wine I settle into the comfy seats of the cinema where they perform. [more]

ANTISOCIAL TAP’S BIG NAMES at The Church, 50 Dundas Street
reviewed by Patrick Davies 19 Mar 2011
Worth catching
AntiSocial Tap has made a home in the, now renamed, The Church Cinema, Bar & Café. Formed mostly by Otago Uni students, they have presented stand-up in various venues around Dunedin over the past two years or more. And perhaps this is why the presentation of this show is in some ways a disappointment. [more]

DU BIST EIN UBER SHOW! at The Church, 50 Dundas Street
reviewed by Patrick Davies 19 Mar 2011
Deceit, clues and wilful misdirection with no holds barred
The cast work extremely well together. Long range formats require a lot of listening and retention of information, not only from the audience but from each other as the larger story is woven together. Everyone’s ears are open here and it there is a wobble, they support while still gently ribbing for the minor infraction. [more]

SCARED SCRIPTLESS – L.O.V.E at Fortune Theatre Studio
reviewed by Kate Morris 19 Mar 2011
More box-ticker than box-pusher
There is much to love about L.O.V.E. but at the same time it doesn’t quite meet its potential in terms of exploiting the various nuances and sub-cultures of its theme. [more]

DIANE SPENCER: ALL-PERVADING MADNESS at The Classic Studio
reviewed by Richard Howard 19 Mar 2011
Variously shocking, mind expanding, battering to nice sensibilities, very funny and very entertaining!
Diane Spencer an award-winning comedian from England ... engages her audience in a simple narrative that covers a mere few hours late one evening while trying to get home to her boyfriend having assisted her mother to sort out an issue with a ferret. [more]

THE SECRET OF CAPPING SHOW’S SUCCESS at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Patrick Davies 19 Mar 2011
Of shows gone by and things to come
In the guise of a ‘seminar’ we are presented with an historical eye’s view of what has made the Otago University’s – the longest and continuously running – Capping Show the success that it is. [more]
