THE JUNGLE at Silo Theatre
reviewed by Denis Edwards 9 May 2006
Pain and damage in Nowra's Sydney
It’s a Sydney where people carom and collide off each other. Only, unlike snooker or pool, to which the structure of this piece owes something, chips are taken from them as they crash into each other, and Nowra isn’t going to stint on showing us the pain and the damage. [more]

CYMBELINE at Dog's Bollix Irish Pub
reviewed by Denis Edwards 17 May 2006
Bawdy Bard at the bar
Newton Road’s Dog’s Bollix is a close-to-perfect venue for Shakespeare’s comedies and romances. As a rough-house theatre it has already made the annual ‘Bloomsday’ festival a sell-out hit. There is the required pleasantly seedy atmosphere. The stage is well lit. There are different levels and the bar does a brisk business. [more]

EVERYTHING. NOW at Luxembourg Gardens
reviewed by Denis Edwards 1 Jun 2006

Stephen Bain has points to make, and his play is as much his making them as it is about his characters. To his credit he delivers them with a stylish eye for design and movement, and a directorial touch .... [more]

THE BLONDE, THE BRUNETTE AND THE VENGEFUL REDHEAD at The Forge at The Court Theatre
reviewed by Ron Kjestrup 9 May 2006
Lives unravelled
Playwright Robert Hewett has said he believes that creating good roles for actors is a crucial part of the job. He has certainly created a challenge here: a solo piece with seven characters arranged in a series of monologues that relate the story of a shopping centre crime and it’s effects on a disparate group of characters. HAMLET at Court One

A sense of space and pace
It is too often forgotten that Shakespeare wrote entertainments. Thankfully, this production of Hamlet at Court Theatre is entertaining. [more]

YING TONG at Court One
reviewed by Ron Kjestrup 11 Jun 2006
Comedy of manias needs more manic energy
A journey through Spike Milligan’s psyche during the last days of the Goon show. Set literally in his sick bed – a giant grey bed, crash landed on a stage oozing fragments of words – the characters of Milligan’s life (both real and imagined) emerge through trap doors. [more]

James & Mary Tyrone
LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT at Court One
reviewed by Ron Kjestrup 23 Jul 2006
Long night's struggle to identify
The play’s themes of personal isolation, the influence of family relationships on our psychology, drug addiction, personal history laid bare and family secrets, read like a tabloid front page now but in the context of its time, having these subjects appear on a stage in such a personal way was groundbreaking. BACKWARDS IN HIGH HEELS at The Forge at The Court Theatre

Too much, too young, too little to care about
I’ve noticed a genre. Mid-career author writes about middle-aged couple having mid-life crisis ... [more]

FLAGONS & FOXTROTS at Court One
reviewed by Ron Kjestrup 29 Aug 2006
Down the dance hall sixties style: true community theatre
Ross Gumbley and Alison Quigan’s Flagons and Foxtrots is a lovely recreation of a time when New Zealanders gathered at the local hall and met their future spouses. Shiela’s wore miniskirts, a bloke had to do the right thing and everyone drank beer around the boot in the car park. [more]

Hamlet (Gareth Reeves) & Gertrude (Rima te Wiata)
HAMLET at Court One
reviewed by Stephen Austin 9 May 2006
Mixed bag; much cut
Peter Evans has chosen to forego much of the political subtext inherent in the play and set it in a periodless theatrical workshop space, allowing his actors much free-reign over their characters and concentrating on the relationships central to the story. [more]
