Hypnotic Existential Absurdism I can’t think of any show I’ve seen which has evoked the sense that I’m having a dream more than Ink. As we enter into the mist that pervades the theatre and auditorium space to seat ourselves I feel partially transformed to a more primitive, dreamlike state of perception. [more] |

Delusions of innocence I wonder if German playwright Dea Loher would ever have graced a Wellington stage if Sebastian Sommer had not chosen her Innocence for his major Master of Theatre Arts in Directing (MTA)* production. [more] |

Exhilarating ‘Gloriously abandoned’ and ‘organised chaos’ are the phrases that spring to mind when seeking to describe Cirkus Cirkor’s ebullient Inside Out. Only when you stop and think do you realise it has to be ultra organised or someone would get hurt. [more] |

Delightful new twists on old tricks The day we all said “No more animals in the circus” was a great day for world theatre. No more caged animals, so acrobats, clowns, trapeze artists, jugglers, musicians and illusionists were obliged to find new ways of carrying on old tricks. [more] |

Refreshing and honest approach relished by young cast Inside Out is a beautiful, heartfelt rendition of Sarah Delahunty’s great play about depression and the phenomenon of self harming. Poetry for the senses Insomnia in a Daydream explores a common and serious problem for a lot of people: the inability to sleep. It's a bold piece which pushes the boundaries between sleep and awakeness; reality and illusion. Siri Embla and Gus Simonovic take us on a surreal journey of the senses, asking us to question what makes us real, and indeed what is really real. [more] |

Glorious soap-opera cliché ConArtists, those veterans of thigh-slappingly hilarious long-form improv concepts, are playing a three-week season of a steamy, scandal-ridden medical soap opera “so hot they won't show it on television!” performed live on stage. [more] |

A clear aptitude for genuinely funny comedy I can think of few things harder than to make songs up on the spot. When you add the expectation of humour the task seems all the more difficult. However it took no time at all for the audience to warm to the musical mayhem of Covert Entertainment’s Instant Broadway. [more] |
