CHOCOLATE ZUCCHINI COOKIES at School of Physical Education, Otago University
reviewed by Kasey Dewar 29 Mar 2011
A the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
Accompanied A J Hicklings on a wooden pipe-like instrument the dancer’s movements seemed to be inspired by nature with delicate bird-like movements and striking arched poses. Overall it was beautifully choreographed piece carefully matched to the haunting music of the pipe, and set off with the sun shining down over the large free-standing archway. [more]

MATES & LOVERS at Fortune Theatre
reviewed by Jennifer Aitken (Critic) 29 Mar 2011
A stunning piece of theatre
This production of Mates and Lovers exuded a very rough-and-ready aesthetic. Like the erotic adventures of many in “the Domain” or up on Mt. Vic, this production was rough, earthy and essential. [more]

BARE FOR CHRISTCHURCH AT THE CIVIC at Civic Theatre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 27 Mar 2011
The resultant standing ovation all but caused another earthquake
Originally written as a two-hander, for one male and one female to play the seventeen characters between them, the charitable company has stretched Bare to allot one actor per role. In one way it’s the definition of a guilty pleasure to be so grateful to have witnessed this historic event. [more]

SOMETHING WORTH SEEING? at Burns Hall
reviewed by Sharon Matthews 27 Mar 2011
Poetic smell of sunshine, sweaty clothes, and spicy foods
Bula vinaka, Kia ora, talofa lava, malo e lelei, kia orana. I’m in love. I’m in love with a group of young Pacific Island and Maori poets, wordsmiths, writers, and musicians from in and around South Auckland. [more]

THE REAL NEW ZEALAND TOUR at Hutton Theatre, Otago Museum

The Triple A and RTDs
Thank God I wasn’t in the front row. Anyone that dared sit there was in for a ribbing. Fortunately the trio of Vaughan King, Steve Wrigley and Ben Hurley (of TV3 7 Days fame) possess an intuitive ability to identify who they can get away with picking on. [more]

THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES at Hawkes Bay Opera House
reviewed by Kirsty van Rijk 26 Mar 2011
Heart and humanity
The Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler walks a delicate balance between political activism and entertaining theatre. When it was first performed the content was shocking politically, socially, theatrically. But as a feminist text, I’m not sure The Vagina Monologues hasn’t lost some of its impact as the changes it sought have come of age. [more]

DROWNING IN VERONICA LAKE at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Sharon Matthews 26 Mar 2011
Strength in uncertainty
The play opens with a striking image. A woman with long blonde hair stands centre-stage in a figure-hugging white gown that spreads out into an enormous pool of fabric at her feet. Caught in the spotlight of our gaze ... [more]

WILSON DIXON’S AMERICAN DREAM at Glenroy Auditorium
reviewed by Patrick Davies 25 Mar 2011
A marvellous, fully developed and loveable character
Another Dunedin comic makes it big, and in front of a capacity crowd, Jesse Griffin’s loveable cowboy wowed them. Jesse was one of a posse of Dunedin talent that went through Allen Hall Theatre at one of its most prolific and talented times. [more]

STELLA GRAHAM: KARMA COMEDIAN at Polson Higgs Comedy Club, XII Below Bar
reviewed by Patrick Davies 24 Mar 2011
Cruising on funny
Stella Graham is a Brit from Coventry who’s come to NZ to find out if she’s going to hell or not. The main structure of the show revolves around something that her sister (the doctor, yeah that’s the one), said when she was young – [more]
