NO SEX PLEASE WE’RE BRITISH at Harlequin Theatre, Howick
reviewed by Nik Smythe 29 Nov 2007
High impact, low-brow farce lacks polish
The rude-imentary plot concerns Frances who's sent off for some mail-order Scandiavian glassware, only to discover that she's unwittingly subscribed to a supplier of illicit pornography. This is on the heels of her new mother-in-law arriving to impose herself on their post-honeymoon lives for an indefinite period. [more]

THE FEMININE at Cross Street Studios
reviewed by Nik Smythe 13 Dec 2007
Sainsbury: fast becoming a classic playwright of his generation
... Like Sainsbury’s previous work The Mall, in the same arena, The Feminine is pure theatre, relying entirely on its script and live performers to enthral its patrons. [more]

THE SANTA CLAUS SHOW 07 at The Pumphouse, Takapuna
reviewed by Nik Smythe 16 Dec 2007
A Merry Little Christmas Cracker
The action opens with Alana (Helen Barrett) and Kelly (Deborah Huxford-Hunt) playing hide and seek. It’s soon clear that Kelly’s the bossy one and Alana the shy one, exemplified in the difference in length of their letters to Santa Claus. Thru the magic of theatrical FX we follow the letters as they are blown on the wind to the North Pole. [more]

NOT THE MESSIAH (HE’S A VERY NAUGHTY BOY) at Civic Theatre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 18 Dec 2007
Nicely Handeled by Eric the Not-Half Idle and Company
The concept is logical: for centuries we have known that great oratorio based on the life of Jesus Christ, Georg Friedrich Händel’s The Messiah. Yet for more than a quarter of a century a different legend has existed - that of Brian, the naive and hapless Jewish anti-Roman activist who is mistaken for the Messiah and can’t shake the reputation for the life of him. THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS at The Pumphouse / Lake Pupuke
reviewed by Nik Smythe 16 Jan 2008
Quietly distinctive slick family theatre
A well-known story in an unusual outdoor setting where the audience is required to literally follow the action around on foot makes for an experience both familiar and unique. [more]

SHREW'D at The Auckland Performing Arts Centre: TAPAC
reviewed by Nik Smythe 26 Jan 2008
Pure entertainment
In this, their first production for 2008, is the most vibrant, engaging and truly alive 90 odd minutes of theatre I have ever witnessed from Auckland Theatre Company. From the moment we are ushered to the outdoor auditorium for the first act the exuberant young cast have me engaging readily with their comic follies, these larger than life caricatures seeming oddly natural. THE TEMPEST at Hawke Sea Scout Hall, Cox's Bay
reviewed by Nik Smythe 7 Feb 2008
Innovative exciting theatre ahoy!
The staging of this nautical tale by the sea at twilight in the maritime trappings of the Cox’s Bay Sea Scout Hall is nothing short of inspired, right down to the sax player serenading the setting sun as the audience settles. Decked out with beer crates and tea chests for tables and chairs, assorted chimes and screeds of white muslin, the audience is placed not so much in the round as right in amongst it all. [more]

THE UNDERARM at Hawkins Theatre, Papakura
reviewed by Nik Smythe 17 Feb 2008
THE NEW PUNCH AND JUDY?
As the audience convenes, a lost looking fellow clad in the distinctive old Kiwi beige & brown hauls his chillybin through the audience calling out for someone called ‘Don’. If you’ve ever been to a live cricket match you’ll recognise the image. You’ll also recognise ... [more]

RESIDENT ALIEN at The Auckland Performing Arts Centre: TAPAC
reviewed by Nik Smythe 21 Feb 2008
Style with content
We are invited, like so many welcome strangers, into 90 year old Quentin Crisp’s dusty, cluttered private single room in New York. It is odd to see someone so famously flamboyant living in such squalor, yet Crisp was similarly famous for his frugal lifestyle as he was for his orientation, ostentation and opinions. [more]

BEYOND THE BLUE at Concert Chamber - Town Hall, THE EDGE
reviewed by Nik Smythe 2 Mar 2008
Adventurous theatre of intrepid adventures
Twelve energetic young women aged 16 - 20 comprise the cast of Beyond the Blue, an initiative which began a year ago, after a process of auditioning and intensive workshopping. I imagine that each of them must feel very fortunate to be involved with such purely creative and truly original storytelling. [more]
