I’M NOT RAPPAPORT at Downstage Theatre
reviewed by John Smythe 16 Oct 2007
Greater relevance for us now in this revival of a modern classic
... Two nobodies have nothing to do and nowhere to go but spend their days on a bench in an unprepossessing corner of Central Park, beneath a concrete pedestrian overpass, shaded by trees and overlooking a lake, apparently (out where the audience sits). These men do not go gently into the night. Nor to they exactly rage, rage against the dying of the light ... [more]

Comic flair lights up stage
Like old wines and cheeses, Ray Henwood and George Henare get better as they get older especially now that they are closer in age to the curmudgeonly octogenarian odd couple that they play in I’m not Rappaport than they were when they first played the roles 20 years ago at Downstage. [more]

Appealing addressing of ‘hide the oldies’ issues
The somewhat misleading publicity for this show does nothing to reveal its depth, humour and honesty. Don’t be fooled – this is not a show about two laughing men who are old enough to know better (thought that certainly comes into it). Rather, I’m Not Rappaport is an oft hard-hitting examination of the conflict, cruelty and loss of independence old age brings, interlaced with wit and stirring monologues ... [more]

An oldie but a goodie
... Ray Henwood and George Henare play two octogenarians whiling away their days in New York’s Central Park. Neither is prepared to grow old quietly and the play is action-packed – despite most of it taking place on two park benches – with drug taking, muggers, angry employers and family troubles to the fore ... Well-paced pantomime finds favour
It's November, and at the Fortune Theatre that means another Roger Hall pantomime. [more]

Slapstick humour at its best
For a young boy at his first “big show” this was one meeean Stalk! Here’s how our six year old saw it: [more]

JACK AND THE BEANSTALK at The Red Brick Hall

Village theatre at its best
... While Ormsby’s script is liberally sprinkled with topical references (“I’ll tell Aunty Susan!” when Jack’s mum wants to wallop him with her broom), its moral heart is stronger than most of the versions I’ve read. This isn’t a lazy and stupid Jack scoring big on a get-rich-quick scheme by murdering the giant ... [more]

Full of humour for young and old
On a very bright and creative set the familiar story of how Jack (Jamie McCaskill) sells Missy Moo (Brooke Williams), the family cow, for three magic beans, much to the annoyance of his Mother (Gareth Williams), is told with polish and pizzazz by the spirited cast under the direction of Rachel More. Exuberant, delightful, versatile cast
Time again for the frankest audience of all to test the ability of their theatre elders to engage them in the special delight of staged story telling. On that score, this production would have to be rated a neatly crafted success, sharpening up the old story with bright characters and providing a suitably collaborative ending ... [more]

Two thumbs up for embellished traditional story
This production of Jack and the Beanstalk is a silly, vibrant, larger-than-life fairytale romp ... Jack’s main preoccupation is telling jokes, in fact his greatest aspiration is to be funny. He tells jokes frequently throughout the show – awful, predictable jokes, most of which delight the children. [more]
