JACK AND THE BEANSTALK! at Onehunga Community House, 83 Selwyn St
reviewed by Sian Robertson 1 Oct 2012
People, puppets, participation, slapstick and a sense of the magical
Devised with broad story-book strokes and a bit of rhyme and repetition, it's easy for the young ones to follow. The great costumes and a simple but innovative set hold the kids in thrall. Parents won't be too bored either – the acting is good and there's a smattering of adult jokes that sail over the children's heads. What's more, the kids' squeals of delight make it all worth it. JACQUES BREL IS ALIVE AND WELL AND LIVING IN PARIS at Unitec Theatre, Entry 1, Carrington Rd, Mt Albert
reviewed by Lexie Matheson 11 Nov 2012
Bittersweet joy in sublimely human capturing of lost souls and despair
There’s nothing more exciting than being in the audience of a graduation performance and attending the UNITEC School of Performing and Screen Arts Graduating Acting Class 2012 final soiree is absolutely no exception. The fact that it is stunning is merely a bonus. [more]

JAILBAIT at Galatos
reviewed by Lillian Richards 28 May 2011
About as elegant as it is awkward
Jailbait, by American playwright Deirdre O’Connor, is ostensibly a play about sex but ultimately, by subtle turns, it becomes about belonging. [more]

JAMES ACASTER at The Classic
reviewed by Kate Ward-Smythe 14 May 2013
Intelligent craft and delivery appreciated
Looking like Tin-Tin’s nerdy brother, James’ unassuming personality, appearance, and smooth casual delivery are as inherently funny as his perspective. As James quietly performs a whimsical yet cleverly calculated hour, his humour feels natural and completely off the cuff. [more]

JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH at Fortune Theatre
reviewed by Terry MacTavish 11 Aug 2008
Fantastical magic and charm
“Set young imaginations alight with the magic of theatre!” the Fortune promises, and indeed delivers, with this, its third Roald Dahl adaptation. On opening night it was snowing outside, but nothing could be warmer than the atmosphere inside the theatre, the auditorium humming with excited children clambering across the seats to make new friends, and the stage bubbling with marvellous fantasy characters in gorgeous costumes, while the fabulous giant peach positively glows. JAMES KEATING: BILLBORED at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian
reviewed by Jackson Coe 6 May 2009
A laugh or two
Although a few gems rang out at the opening night of Billbored, it was mostly tepid laughs for the premiere of James Keating’s stand-up act. [more]

JAMES NOKISE IN SO–SO GANGSTA at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian
reviewed by Hannah Smith 8 May 2013
Smart, from the heart, with political bite
James Nokise does not immediately appear like a gangsta: he is a little over dressed for the Fringe Bar actually, in a tux and tie. However, this show is all about defying and transforming perceptions, and so the fancy get up is apt. [more]

JAMES NOKISE – THE ADVENTURES OF JIMI SAMOA at Comedy Underground, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Venus Stephens 3 May 2009
Elixir for life comedy
The hour long gig starts with a ‘curtained intro’, by that I mean James stands behind the stage curtain, introduces himself and then steps out to the enthused applause of us, his audience. He has an affable rapport and extends the intimacy of the venue to relaxed chat with the punters which he revisits, thus involving you in his stories. [more]

From Killer Beez to ‘Bananarama’, bigots feel Jimi’s sting
– James Nokise takes us on an emotionally charged and enjoyable ride It’s not so much a show about the adventures of Jimi Samoa as about how up-and-coming local comedian James Nokise came to be Jimi. [more]

JAMES NOKISE: BEIGE AGAINST THE MACHINE at The Classic Studio
reviewed by Sian Robertson 21 Apr 2008
A unique flavour of street smarts
This Welsh-Samoan youngster from New Zealand living in London has a unique position on race relations and cultural perceptions around the world. He seems to be playing up the Samoan angle for us Kiwis – which is great because there are enough comics in the festival who are going to be slagging off London ... [more]
