THE MUCKS : A COMEDY at The Basement, Lower Greys Ave
reviewed by Nik Smythe 24 Jun 2009
Short, bleak and questionable
Sean and Debbie Muck are siblings struggling in London’s east end at the lower end of the class spectrum, to say the least. The play opens with Sean eating baked beans from a fancy dessert dish and mentioning important engagements with Hello! Magazine and the various obligations that beset the fabulous celebrities they fantasize about being. [more]

BOOM BAH! at Lower NZI, Level 1, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 16 Jul 2009
Cheerfully innocent, delightfully silly musical spectacle
Leading Australian children’s theatre company Windmill has come to Auckland for the first time to present Boom Bah!, a curious oddity based on the best-selling picture book by Phil Cummings and Nina Rycroft. [more]

APOLLO 13: MISSION CONTROL at Lower NZI, Level 1, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 2 Aug 2009
A fun experience with real dramatic tension
Ingenious devices both technological and theatrical are employed throughout to both replicate the tension of a genuine crisis whilst ultimately leading to a satisfying solution. Receiving arbitrary instructions through their job manuals, or else by telephone or memo, various audience members at different times leap to action accordingly ... [more]

HOLDING THE MAN at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Nik Smythe 8 Aug 2009
Aids awareness theatrified

OOH BABY BABY! at Concert Chamber - Town Hall, THE EDGE
reviewed by Nik Smythe 22 Aug 2009
Highly entertaining tribute to the world's most common miracle
The story comprises three main plots - Obstetrician Dr. Suzanna Sewell and her desperate mission to conceive before her own biological clock goes off. Workaholic fertility clinic director Dr. Roche is pregnant, in labour in fact, but in denial. Dr. Verity Rile is a driven career woman searching for the perfect sperm. [more]

RUBEN GUTHRIE at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Nik Smythe 19 Sep 2009
The pitfalls of a disaffected creative exec
“Hello, my name is Ruben Guthrie and I’m in advertising”; scene one line one has the title character introducing himself at his initial 12 steps support group meeting. With all his nervous fidgeting and snappy talk, Ruben’s like someone we’ve all met – at the far end of youth, a success story in the vice-ridden world of promotional media, tried everything twice and beginning to show the strain. SNAKE AND LIZARD at The Pumphouse, Takapuna

Quirky reptilian odd-couple amuse with irony and puppets
Tim Bray Productions celebrates their 50th show, mostly for children, since they began in 1991. Their quirky adaptation of Joy Cowley’s delightful collection of tales centres around this classic desert-dwelling reptilian odd-couple. The simple stories address such timeless social concerns as manners, loyalty in friendship, honesty and commerce… not always in the way you might expect. [more]

SKIN TIGHT at Te Karanga Gallery
reviewed by Nik Smythe 1 Oct 2009
Drama, humour, poetry and eroticism
Arts on Tour NZ's production of playwright Gary Henderson’s most celebrated work to date has been on tour for five weeks, predominately playing smaller towns throughout the nation. However, thanks to the initiative of SmackBang and the most generous accommodation of K Road’s Te Karanga gallery, Aucklanders have the privileged opportunity to catch this classic play for four nights only. HARLEQUIN SERVANT OF TWO MASTERS at ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 2 Oct 2009
Hilarious, historic, extraordinary …
Centre stage of the Aotea Centre’s ASB Theatre stands a tall curtain rail, with a smaller raised stage in front upon which the story is acted out. Around the stage are chairs and stools and one or two instruments, and down stage a row of candle footlights. The ancient prompter (Stefano Guizzi) painstakingly lights them one by one whilst greeting us with a friendly ‘kia-ora’, thereby initiating the many laughs to follow. [more]
