JAN MAREE: EAT ME! at Sandwiches
reviewed by Priyanka Bhonsule (Hutt News) 7 May 2010
Family, food and love: both funny and moving
It is no easy task to cook, talk and be funny but Jan Maree manages to do all three for two very entertaining hours.* Eat Me is the second part of the series Maree started in 2007 where she uses her life experiences, family recipes and stories to create a relatively “out there” concept of cookery and comedy. JAN MAREE: HAIRY TODAY, GONE TOMORROW! at Fringe Bar, Cnr Cuba & Vivian

'Lost and Found' odyssey of self-discovery amuses and moves
I do like stand-up that pursues a purpose beyond just being funny because the comedy invariably works better when it bounces off some other objective. In Jan Maree's case – and she is a 'case' – it’s a search for her roots that drives the narrative. The classic who am I? / where do I belong? / identity crisis syndrome is no less compelling for being as old as humanity itself when a consummate storyteller makes it personal, true and entertaining, which she certainly does. In quest of a gem
In this ‘first date’ tryout season, Mel Dodge’s solo show Jane Austen is Dead is definitely one I’d like to meet up with again. [more]

JANE EYRE at Fortune Theatre
reviewed by Terry MacTavish 6 Oct 2008
Vivid life brought to dazzling adaptation
“Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!” Generations of readers have thrilled to the passionate outcry of the despised orphan and governess, Jane Eyre. [more]

JANEY GODLEY IN DOMESTIC GODLEY at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St
reviewed by Simon Sweetman (The Dominion Post) 7 May 2009
Must-see comedian funny, naturally #1
Godley’s anecdotes from her own life are refreshing, particularly when so many female comedians seem determined to outdo the men with foul language and references to genitals; a sort of desperate one-upmanship. Godley of course will go to crass places, but it’s funny – and real. [more]

She has the gift; is a gift
Godley is not just a comedian. She takes one of the most harrowing things that could happen in anyone’s family and finds a way to laugh through it. She’s a goddamn healer! [more]

JANEY GODLEY IN DOMESTIC GODLEY at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St

Familiar, funny and real
This is Godley’s fourth visit to our shores and it is evident in her warmth, familiarity and in her references to local culture. She gleefully observes how ironic it is that our most infamous homeless person is naked. [more]

Feisty fighter fascinates
With a life like hers behind her, Janey Godley (not her real name) from Glasgow is a living example of the efficacy of comedy for healing a wounded soul. [more]

JANEY GODLEY IN GOOD GODLEY (AK) at Silo Theatre

Mirth in murky depths
She’s tough, coarse, and rude - but fair, and damn funny. Scotland’s Janey Godley is a survivor, with a twinkle in her eye and wit to match. [more]
