![]() JARROD BAKER & TJ MCDONALD: MONKEY VS ROBOT at Limelight Lounge, Aotea Centre reviewed by Venus Stephens 22 May 2009 |
Gritty humour TJ Mc Donald and Jarrod Baker are a duo from Wellington equipped with that cool, un-fussed, vibe that I’ve found a lot of people from that ‘part of the fish’ possess. Their sets are split in half, nicely sharing the hour allocation. [more] |

Fresh but cold and lacking energy Monkey vs Robot is billed as ‘two young comedians going head to head in the Thunder-dome of Mirth’. Do not be fooled. There are no monkeys or robots in sight, and certainly no conflict, in fact the two comedians are never even on the stage at the same time. [more] |

Masterful incredulity Sweating and out of breath Byrne hits the ground raving, a few light exclamations of excited dismay foreboding the more extreme levels of incredulity to come. His ornate black and red jacket and imposing frame, slightly stooped as if ready to brawl at the bat of an eye, gives the impression of a very tall gothic leprechaun. [more] |

Speedily seeking joy And he’s off: fresh from performing in Wellington ... Cook declares the Classic stage to be one of his favourite in the world. Given the ensuing accounts of real, very personal experiences mostly involving his family and in particular his parents, it feels as though he really means it. [more] |
![]() JASON COOK: JOY at San Francisco Bathhouse, 171 Cuba St reviewed by Simon Sweetman 7 May 2009 |
Must see comedian funny, naturally #2 Jason Cook (England) had the audience on his side immediately with his first show in Wellington. He too fits the bill of a naturally funny comic, something so many New Zealand comedians struggle with (trying too hard with their on-stage delivery). [more] |

Cook dishes up joyful evening Jason Cook's new comedy show comes with a disclaimer. It advises, in no uncertain terms, that those of a cynical disposition should avoid his show. [more] |

Brutal honest truth brings joy True to his word, Jason Cook’s show leaves you with an uplifting sense of ‘joy’ – from the start through to the finish. Sure, there’s a sense of heaviness towards the end of the show that we were warned about at the start, but Cook is the first to put his hand up and admit it (literally). [more] |

The sordid underbelly of comedy When I checked in the festival programme after the show I couldn’t believe my eyes. $10? Really?! The Asylum is absolutely the best value for money in the entire festival; a seemingly endless succession of world-class comedians hosted by the cheerfully wicked Jason Cook. [more] |

JASON JOHN WHITEHEAD: EMOTIONAL WHITEMALE at Happy (Cnr Tory & Vivian) reviewed by John Smythe 6 May 2009 |
From true places He can flash a fine set of white gnashers to counter any shock we might feel at something that’s slipped from those oh-so-innocent lips. This is what he means, I guess, with his ‘emotional whitemail’ tag. [more] |

JASON JOHN WHITEHEAD: EMOTIONAL WHITEMALE at Limelight Lounge, Aotea Centre reviewed by Candice Lewis 20 May 2009 |

Satire based or simply silly For the most part JJ’s confidential and rambling style is working well. His delivery brings to mind a looser, less offensive Bill Hicks. He attempts and mostly succeeds in taking a law or thought from either end of the political spectrum and brutalizing it for all its comic worth. I laugh a lot ... [more] |
