BARE FOR CHRISTCHURCH AT THE CIVIC at Civic Theatre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 27 Mar 2011
The resultant standing ovation all but caused another earthquake
Originally written as a two-hander, for one male and one female to play the seventeen characters between them, the charitable company has stretched Bare to allot one actor per role. In one way it’s the definition of a guilty pleasure to be so grateful to have witnessed this historic event. [more]

THE BEAR at Victoria Theatre (The Vic), 93 Victoria Rd, Devonport
reviewed by Nik Smythe 12 May 2011
Acerbic and insightful depiction of a wholly absurd relationship
The Bear is the inaugural production from the fledgling Outbox, a rather inspiring initiative aimed at combining the relative talents and energies of successful veterans and prospective young up-and-comers in the industry. [more]

AWHI TAPU at TAPAC Theatre, Western Springs
reviewed by Nik Smythe 23 Jun 2011
Considerable emotional impact
The doors open and the audience is invited in warmly by the playful beany-clad Sonny (Tola Newbery), instantly creating a sense that we are a part of this community. The impression is enhanced as the cast of three male and one female young adults wail out classic standards to a nylon string guitar while the patrons duly seat themselves. [more]

SHORT+SWEET THEATRE, AUCKLAND 2011 at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Nik Smythe 6 Jul 2011
Top 20 Week 1
There are only three rules that I know of in this competition: 1) The works are original, 2) they are approximately, but no longer than, ten minutes in duration, and 3) the sets have to be placed and struck within 30 seconds each side. Everything else is up to the contestants, now go! [more]

SHORT+SWEET THEATRE, AUCKLAND 2011 at Herald Theatre, Aotea Centre, The Edge
reviewed by Nik Smythe 17 Jul 2011
Wildcards Week 2
The two Short + Sweet Wildcard sets each comprise ten eclectic works made up of last-minute entries, as well as some often-intriguing offerings from less seasoned practitioners. The overall show is inevitably going to be patchier than in the Top 20 sets, but who knows whether you may just be an unwitting witness to history in the making… [more]

A COLLECTION OF NONSENSE – THE OWL AND THE PUSSYCAT & OTHER ODDITIES at Victoria Theatre (The Vic), 93 Victoria Rd, Devonport
reviewed by Nik Smythe 19 Jul 2011
Big on talent and artistry – treat yourselves
Outbox Theatre Company has turned on a magical show for children, adults and nostalgic geriatrics alike. From its quiet, sleepy beginning to the majestically extravagant closing number, the whole shebang jam-packed with song, dance and above all, nonsense! [more]

KING ARTHUR at TAPAC Theatre, Western Springs
reviewed by Nik Smythe 22 Jul 2011
Brilliantly batty
The Outfit Theatre Ensemble brings their own original take on the characters and events of Britain’s oldest and most beloved mythological epic. It’s quite a departure from the overall style one may be used to, and from a number of the characters’ archetypes and relationships ... [more]

UNITEC GRADUATION PLAYS 2011: QUAD BILL at Unitec Dance Studios, Entry One, Carrington Rd
reviewed by Nik Smythe 13 Nov 2011
Double Feature B
The potential trouble with drama school productions is that the casting is limited to available students, causing possible difficulties matching the players to the roles. In light of this, the casting for both Artaud at Rodez and The Water Engine is remarkably well appointed, indicating an exemplary level of versatility among them. [more]

MAKING A KILLING at Musgrove Studio, Maidment Theatre
reviewed by Nik Smythe 19 Nov 2011
Zany, convoluted, black comedy thriller
Catalyst Theatre’s latest original production is a fairly ambitious piece set in the cutthroat, larcenous world of high finance (read ‘corporate piracy’). [more]

INSTANT ANATOMY at Q Theatre Loft, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Nik Smythe 20 Nov 2011
Glorious soap-opera cliché
ConArtists, those veterans of thigh-slappingly hilarious long-form improv concepts, are playing a three-week season of a steamy, scandal-ridden medical soap opera “so hot they won't show it on television!” performed live on stage. [more]
