Corroded classic Ultimately, trying to get across any kind of emotional authenticity, relate-ability, complexity of character or narrative arc when each scene change is longer than each scene is an impossible feat. [more] |

British charm and constant merriment Jeff Green’s opening night is best summed up by one of the few heckles in the night: at the end of it a woman wails, “No, I don’t want you to finish!” With infectious effervescence and smiling sarcasm from start to finish, Jeff is an energetic ball of British mischief. Softly spoken now and then, but hugely entertaining throughout, he has mastered the art of comic story telling to perfection. [more] |

Sex and Australia hit the mark It’s difficult not to like the guy – Green is that friend you meet up with every now and then at the pub who always has funny anecdotes to tell you and before long you’re saying, ‘Go on then, tell us one more.’ [more] |

A ride, a blast … You really do have to be there You had to be there. It was a desperate need. But only a select few gained admittance. Otherwise you were on the outer. Out on the street in the throng cajoling the gatekeepers to let you in, to the exhibition opening, the A-list club, the place to be, swearing you had an invitation ... [more] |

Colourful show fun, confusing Tucked away on a ledge in a corner of the bright yellow painted back wall of the Bats stage there is a small inflatable rabbit which is the only direct visual reference to the work of Jeff Koons in this hour-long teasing exploration of some of the ideas behind his art and the world that spawned it. Memorable assault on your senses From director Willem Wassenaar we would expect nothing less than a full-on sensory-overloaded primary-coloured production. Jeff Koons is all of the above. Wassenaar has the most distinctive directing style in the Capital ... distinctive, but not predictable. This translated play by Rainald Goetz, set in the late 1980s, is in your face from the moment you see the yellow balloon festooned stage and 80s pastiche costumes ... [more] |

Pretty wacky If art is a mirror to life, then there must be some pretty freaky artists out there. Jeff Koons, written by Rainald Goetz, is titled after one of the world’s most popular, and by necessity controversial, artists. The show is an examination of the late-80’s New York postmodern pop-art scene, and playfully mocks the looks, icons and lifestyles of the era in a bid to explore the nature of art and the temperament of artists themselves. Contained yet vibrant tribute ... Having perfected the statuesque stance in sheer beaded sheath frock and swans down coat, the sexy accent, the dry tone of wry humour, the angular gestures and conspiratorial ‘you know what I mean’ look, Ward-Lealand interprets each of the 23 songs ... with an emotional intelligence and subtle richness of musicality that transcends Dietrich’s relatively limited range. Better than the real one Marlene Dietrich wasn’t much of a singer and her acting was limited to variations on her glamorous self, but she was indubitably a great beauty and a star ... When Jennifer Ward-Lealand first appears on stage wrapped in a long white fur coat and wearing a reproduction of the famous dress that caused a sensation in the 1950s, reincarnation for a moment seems a possibility.
