THE LAST TANIWHA at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Kimberley Buchan 22 Mar 2013
Potential yet to be realised
The play has three intertwining plots which could easily become chaotic and confusing but Chris Molloy’s script has structured it in such a way that each story complements and enhances the the other. Each loop back through the three different time periods reveals something that has a sometimes devastating impact on the rest. [more]

ELIXIR at BATS
reviewed by John Smythe 22 Mar 2013
Be puzzled, amazed, entertained …
Robert Haley ends his show, Elixir, with a request for everyone to be circumspect in describing it on social media, etc, so that people can experiences the same surprises we just did. Fair enough. So. Yep. It’s good. Go. [more]

LEO at Maidment
reviewed by Paul Simei-Barton 21 Mar 2013
Organisers save one of the gems for last
Now entering its final week, the AK Festival has been an outstanding success and for those who have been slow on the uptake the programmers have kept some of the best for last. [more]

FOR YOUR FUTURE GUIDANCE at Community Gallery, 20 Princes St
reviewed by Kimberley Buchan 21 Mar 2013
Deadpan humour and understated irony
In keeping with the style, this is not a performance to be passively viewed. In many cases the audience do more work than the performers. A timeline of events is collaboratively pieced together. The awkward role play is given a lift with some wry performances from the audience members. [more]

BREAK IN at Former Education Board /AH Reed /Skinners Building, 33 Jetty St
reviewed by Terry MacTavish 21 Mar 2013
Strong start but drifts into mish-mash
The company has chosen a fantastic venue I’ve never seen before: the historic, decaying but beautiful building that once housed Reed Publishing. A perfect setting for Break In, it is transformed to the seedy Vulva Underground bar, with all the tacky faded splendour of a bordello: fringed lamp shades and velvet drapes; a narcoleptic in tails sagging over the old piano. QUEER DEPORTMENT at George Street
reviewed by Terry MacTavish 21 Mar 2013
Absurd, delightful and challenging
Hit town. Forget shopping, sauntering, worrying about how others are checking you out. Be your own crazy self, do your own wild thing entirely, and blow the consequences! Or, as Queer Deportment puts it with a little more class and erudition, “explore queer expression through demeanour and mannerisms, and the subversion of social rules around walking and shopping.” [more]

IN ABSENTIA at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Jonathan W. Marshall 21 Mar 2013
Emotional density and aesthetic pleasures
In Absentia is an exceptional piece of object / puppet theatre from Tablo Theatre, Christchurch. Composed out of a series of vignettes or images, the work gently shifts from one frame of quiet, wry contemplation, to another. [more]

MOANA PACIFIC DANCE SHOWCASE at TAPAC - The Auckland Performing Arts Centre
reviewed by Margi Vaz Martin 21 Mar 2013
Pacific connections explored in dance works
Moana, meaning Ocean, presents a coming together of stories and ideas from Pacific choreographers living in Auckland City and their response to this urban environment. The underpinning theme of the showcase is to address the space between the heritage, traditions and contemporary dance world of the Pacific while recognizing our connection, seen in the metaphor of the ocean. The first three pieces particularly highlight significant issues for Pacific peoples. [more]

VIRTUOSI at Q Theatre Loft, 305 Queen St
reviewed by Raewyn Whyte (NZ Herald) 21 Mar 2013
Eloquent and beautiful dance documentary
The most exquisite footage is the extraordinarily eloquent sequences of each of them dancing a solo in the city (or cities) where they live now, with beautiful music by Australia-based Kiwi musician Mike Nock. [more]
