Volumes in microcosms In a show that seems like a loose ramble but is actually an astutely crafted meditation inspired by his experiences of bonsai trees, the title Think:Tree turns out to relate to a scene from the film The Karate Kid. [more] |

Endearing, quirky, spontaneous, touching As Joseph begins to speak, he has an awkwardness about him; we're not sure where he's going to go with this, or indeed if he knows. But soon we realise this quirk is part of why he's funny. I find myself (as most of the other audience seem to) drawn into Joseph's piece, as if he is speaking to me personally. I have to catch myself occasionally, before answering my friend back. [more] |

Genuinely likeable autobiographical chat The festival brochure bills this show as “an autobiographical piece about bicycles, love and misanthropy.” But how could anyone possibly call Joseph Harper misanthropic? He bares his feelings, his failings and his triumphs in such a way that you can’t help but feel more human. [more] |

Comedy of anguish generously shared Nothing sucks an audience in and massages their empathy glands quite so effectively as an authentic sharing of true life experience, especially when the storyteller reciprocates the empathy and has the skill to maintain audience interest. [more] |

Raw, honest and enjoyable Joseph Harper’s deeply personal, funny and touching one man show draws you in from the start. His conversational tone and quirks quickly endear him to the audience as he explains his predicament. [more] |

Intense yet lyrical, fretted with humour, absorbing and strangely life-affirming The boys rides the bicycle; the ‘black dog’ of depression rides the boy … When Joseph Harper rides the 10-speed on stage – it’s rear wheel braced to allow him to pedal nowhere fast – he converses with it, variously as himself with the bike; as the dog with himself. ![]() JOSEPH MOORE IN DOPE ASS JOKES at The Classic Studio reviewed by Stephen Austin 14 May 2013 |
|
Nerdy cool and hilarious angst As a performer, Moore is a tightly-wound ball of energy, prone to infrequent bursts of physicality. He has a clear crisp voice and knows how to hit a punch-line for maximum effect and when to pull back to let laughter transition an idea. His style is cool, but nerdy (even though he will vehemently deny it.) [more] |

PowerPointed passion, idealism and genuine excitement Josie Long’s stand up show Be Honourable popped the top off my comed-o-meter, affixing me in a perma-state of giant grin, broken only by primitive howls of hilarity. [more] |

Entirely original and big hearted Josie Long is like that friend or acquaintance (you know the one I mean) who’s bubbly, irrepressibly positive, passionate and quirky, who everyone likes, but who is best administered in small doses. [more] |

Passing on the inspiration Delightfully, disarmingly and charmingly barmy, Josie Long embodies remarkably well the spirit of her show – that effort is sublime, even and perhaps especially when it’s misplaced. The show is an effervescent seminar on the topic of inspiration, and it’s brimming over. Long clearly has her own inspiration on tap, as she has enough material to fill several shows packed into her hour at Bats. [more] |
