ROGER HALL’S ALADDIN : THE PANTOMIME at Fortune Theatre
reviewed by Barbara Frame (Otago Daily Times) 5 Nov 2007
If it doesn’t quite scintillate, it sparkles
Saturday night’s Fortune audience was demographically surprising, the median age being much closer to 39 than 9. But hey, you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy a pantomime, and Roger Hall’s Aladdin, directed by Douglas Kamo, combines material aimed squarely at the littlies with jokes designed to sail right over children’s heads and keep the adults entertained. MOONLIGHT & MAGNOLIAS at Fortune Theatre
reviewed by Barbara Frame (Otago Daily Times) 2 Apr 2008
Frankly my dear, it’s a great play
... Murray Lynch’s snappy direction brings out excellent characterisation. Julian Wilson is all focused determination as Selznick, Matt Wilson’s Fleming is both suave and abrasive, and Anna Henare exploits the comic possibilities of Miss Poppenghaul, Selznick’s secretary, to the limit. [more]

OLD TIMES at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Barbara Frame (Otago Daily Times) 27 Jun 2008
A seriously good drama
In a room apparently far from anywhere, there are three people: Deeley, his wife, Kate, and Kate’s old friend, Anna. They drink coffee and they talk of old times – times of youthful excitement and poverty in London, of eating sandwiches in Green Park and spending evenings at the theatre or in pubs filled with writers and artists. Their sentences are mostly short and there are many pauses — this is, after all, Pinter. [more]

DIRTY DUSTING at Fortune Theatre
reviewed by Barbara Frame (Otago Daily Times) 9 Jul 2008
Dirty, dusty – and funny
What a crowd-pleaser. The theatre was packed, and people were laughing themselves silly. Dirty Dusting, by British playwrights Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood, has clearly clicked with local audiences. [more]

THE WINTER’S TALE at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Barbara Frame (Otago Daily Times) 21 Aug 2008
General exuberance with a few bugbears
One of Shakespeare's later and in some respects more puzzling plays, A Winter's Tale takes place in a world barely tethered to historical or spatial reality. In this world perfectly amiable kings are unexpectedly overcome by deadly jealousy, courtiers are devoured by bears on wild sea-coasts without a second's warning, and dreadfully wronged queens spend the best part of two decades in misery before reconciling with their husbands without a murmur of reproach. HATCH - OR THE PLIGHT OF THE PENGUINS at Otago Pioneer Women's Hall
reviewed by Barbara Frame (Otago Daily Times) 10 Oct 2008
A fascinating fragment of NZ history
It's the 1920s, and we are in a lecture hall. Mr Joseph Hatch is going to tell us how he's been shamefully deprived of his licence to render down penguins for their oil, and ask for our support for its reinstatement. One of the last to arrive is Mr Hatch himself: elderly, tall, fussing with his papers and watch. With the aid of a magic-lantern show he describes his enterprise ... [more]

JACK & THE BEANSTALK - THE PANTOMIME at Fortune Theatre
reviewed by Barbara Frame (Otago Daily Times) 10 Nov 2008
Well-paced pantomime finds favour
It's November, and at the Fortune Theatre that means another Roger Hall pantomime. [more]

SUMMER OF THE SEVENTEENTH DOLL at Globe Theatre
reviewed by Barbara Frame (Otago Daily Times) 12 Dec 2008
Superb portrayals in Aussie classic
“Two eagles flyin’ down out of the sun and coming south every year for the mating season.” This is how Olive describes the arrival of Roo and Barney, Queensland cane cutters who come to Melbourne for their five-month “lay-off.” [more]

DUETS at Fortune Theatre
reviewed by Barbara Frame (Otago Daily Times) 23 Feb 2009
Comic variety in couples
Toby hasn’t ever got round to getting married, but this is his sister Angela’s third wedding. Guests are waiting, along with an ocean’s worth of shrimps and a cake ‘‘the size of a caravan’’. But Angela, overweight and overwrought, goes into a meltdown propelled by Nescafe, a vividly pink bra, a thunderstorm and a broken mirror — and Toby, at the end of his wits, turns to his bottle of Scotch. EMMA at Fortune Theatre
reviewed by Barbara Frame (Otago Daily Times) 21 Apr 2009
Fresh, lucid and funny: 'Emma' charms audience
Utterly charming. This is the only possible response to Jane Austen's Emma, which opened at the Fortune on Saturday night. [more]
